I teach at a high school which is the "Home of the Red Devils" -- people wear red horns to games and the like. Is this just harmless fun, or something more insidious?

Harmless fun.
Remember they are a sports team, and sports teams like intimidating names.
They'd rather say: "No one can beat the red devils/ tigers/ Lions/ buccaneers/ wolverines/ bears/ giants/ etc." than "Prepare to be fabulously defeated by the pink unicorns/ purple pixies/ mice/ squirrels/ fairies"
It's all about sports and machismo. Stupid? kind of. Insidious? Nope.

4 am. I refuse to pull an all-nighter, no matter how much studying I have. But yeah, I've stayed up until 4 cramming...I was delusional the next day. It's not uncommon for me to be up until 1:30 if I put off a project too long or I've got an important test the next day. I freaking hate high school. I know college will be worse...but ugh. BQ: It ends Tuesday. Tomorrow is my last day off. BQ: Okay. I didn't really do anything special. But it wasn't bad, I guess. Just not outstanding.

Get real, man. It's harmless fun. Do you think these people really have sinful intent in their hearts? No. Your mascot was probably chosen in the spirit of competition, just as every mascot in history has been. Lighten up. :)

Mascots are normally chosen to be intimidating for sports mainly. just think about it do u every see a team called the rabbits, puppies, or the fluffies. No most of the time you see the knights, devils, raiders, bears, bulldogs, etc.

My high school was the blue devils. Being a baptist prep school, we had to read the bible. In the very first book, it shows that the devil helped humans gain knowledge. I like to think of people that help other people gain knowledge as a "teacher". Around these parts, teachers are highly revered.

Ever seen the movie "the faculty"? It's probably like that, but instead of aliens it's satan. If I where you (and I am) I'd start bringing holy water with me every time I enter the school.

The same reason they would choose a cougar, tiger, bear or even an Indian.
Insidious? uh no

Because they felt like it?

Why not ask a Manchester United fan?

There is nothing insidious about it.

I would imagine it's just harmless fun, but like you say, it begs the question "Why????" There are thousands of better choices.
