In 1900, Miles Irwin was living with his parents, George Irwin (b. 1836 in Pennsylvania) and Francis J. ? (born 1936 in Canada) in Gregory, SD. They lived right next to Myron and Emily Irwin who are most likely related in some way – probably a married son to George Irwin.

Miles married Myrtle (identified as born in Iowa) about 1904. Myrtle was about 17 at the time of marriage, Miles was about 32. In 1910 they lived in Carlock, Gregory, South Dakota and had two children, Edith (b. abt 1908) and Sylvia (born in 1909). There was also a third child that did not survive.

In 1920 they were still living in Carlock, but now Myrtle was identified as born in Nebraska (1910 census was probably incorrect as to her being born in Iowa – assumed the same as the Miles). Now they had 4 additional children: Gottie, Frances, Gage and Ethel.

I could find nothing beyond 1920.

I can only tell you that usally the documentation on a Person from the staate File is the correct one.I mean the Familie tree could have been but together wrong ,or so .And as you know ,a lots of times when something was not good looking to Families, they just put all of it under the Table ,just not to look bad.Way different from now these days.It was back then like a dishonor to Families.like maybe having a Child at young age and therefore giving it to some other Familie members who cant have children or would take good care. But there would never be anything said by any Familie member ,do not make any Conflict ever.So maybe thats what had happend .And after many Generations or down the road ,noone is thinking to say or knows anything...Go to your Courthouse (or call)and ask them where you could get the best Info ,and go from there.Or call the Library, but I would rather go there ,you can def.get info there.Remember that if something is not the way you know ,they had to have a reson for it and did it the best way posible for themand the one involved...Good luck ..Siggi

I am SO sorry that some in your family have allowed "family secrets" to become a source of hostility. Out of wedlock births are nothing new, they have gone on for hundreds of years. For me, the approach to genealogy is "scientific".. in other words, I am interested in finding the verifiable facts, and NOT making any judgements on them. Not everyone can do this, especially when you are just starting out, and the facts involve emotions of living persons.
Grandpa may not be the bio dad. I am hoping that even so, he raised the children with love. I HAVE noticed a distinct thing in persons born in the 1920s and 1930s, who were affected by the depression. Poverty, split families, etc. is something that many of them would like to forget, not remember. You do have the option of simply noting the fact, and treating Grandpa as a key part of the lives, ie tracing his family and keeping it as part of your files.
As for Larsen.. it is possible he was the actual father. Or (as in one family I worked) the name given was made up, to cover the facts. Sometimes that can be investigated, other times, it will cause a lot of animosity and anger.
As to the census conflict, looks like a double enumeration. This happens quite a bit, if the family was moving. This is because the census taker will ask "who is living in the house AS OF A CERTAIN DATE." In other words, he might not get to the home until October, but he wants to know who was there in June. Often this isn't clear to the family when they answer. So.. one person says accurately who WAS there. Later, the persons get recounted in another home, because they were there when the census taker actually arrived.
It is certainly sad when persons allowed their moral judgements to hurt someone, especially the child who had no control of the situation. You have the opportunity to focus on the good things, I hope.

If you cant find anyone that can find the right pieces to put together, then I would suggest on hiring an investigator that specializes in finding lost families and hidden family trees.

I had found out in my case that last names were changed because it was to not only protect the family but it was shamefull to be Irish and/or French in America back in the 30's & 40's.
Example: Dill was originally LaDill

there are various links interior the resolved questions. distinctive human beings ask distinctive variations of your question 3 - 4 situations an afternoon right here. I used to stick a dozen or so links, with effective notes, into questions like yours. human beings objected. in case you could study and write a term paper in severe college background, you're able to do a reliable activity at your loved ones roots. it is not as consumer-friendly as looking up some thing on Google, in spite of the undeniable fact that it is not as hard as a Ph. Get as many people males in the family as you can to have a DNA Y-Chromosome test, women can get a mtDNA test. You can then see if their DNA matches other people around the country and around the world with the same surname. You can compare results on online databases such as http://www.smgf.com and http://www.ysearch.org

Also, remember back then there were probably DOZENS of different people with the SAME name as your ancestor! Just as there are probably hundreds of people around today with the same name as you. Also, whether people were married or not, they are still your parents.... Sorry, I think only a DNA test will be able to sort this out.

I hope this helps a little. If this so-called "Uncle" of yours thinks he is so righteous and disowns half the family, let it be known that you DO have a family tree, you have some famous relatives (including Presidents, writers, actresses, and singers), and there's not been a single family in the history of mankind that hasn't had skeletons in the closet somewhere along the line, including kings and queens. That is what makes us human. We are NOT meant to be error-free. PS--did he maybe think possibly this guy Larsen DIED before he could marry Edith??
