I've actually noticed this several times and I don't know if they are tired, get more gas or just plain stupid, but I've seen many people , while they fill up at gas stations they use their free hand and pull the hose straight towards them and keep it there until the car is full...the million dollar question is, why? has anyone else noticed this?

ACTUALLY A BENT GAS HOSE CAN HOLD 1 TO 2 TENTHS OF GAS THAT IS LEFT IN IT AND SOME CUSTOMERS KNOW THAT AND THEY WANT THAT EXTRA GAS THAT THE PREVIOUS CUSTOMER LEFT.

Because the hose automatically pulls itself in. Sometimes when I fill up my car I end up using a pump that is the wrong side of the island for where my filler is so I have to run the hose around the back of the car to do it. Pulling on the pipe stops it reeling in the slack ( which would result in the nozzle being at a weird angle and either getting stuck or coming out.)

I haven't noticed When I was a Poor Youth I would take my 50cc motor bike and empty the hoses after the gas station closed. I would think if you straightened out the hose after the pump clicked off you could still empty about 16 ozs out of each hose.

I do this so the nozzle doesn't fall out of the car. Just playing it safe. I have a 1969 camaro and am super careful with it.

Otherwise, it's full serve only in jersey so I just let em pump it for me when im in my other cars.

I guess i misunderstood the Q. I should totally start doing that. lol

more than likely they ar ejust trying to prevent the hose from returning to the pump and spilling gas, or maybe just trying to get the las drop of fuel
