Waitressing is a really hard job to get away from because you get cash daily.

However if you wish to make a change it can be don if your willing to take some time and make an effort.

My wife was a house keeper for about 20 years, and finally "Saw the light". realizing that she would never get a pention from this company and with a lot of proding from myself, she got a job in a kitchen in a hospital, she then started taking typing classes and learned how to use a computer. ( classes paid for by the hospital)

When a clerical job was offered, she applied and has been working as a clerk making desent money, steady 9:00- 5:00 with pension and medical benifits.

She has been working as a clerk for the past 5 and she Loves her job :)

If your on the internet, you obviously can type, you have the skills required to do most office jobs.

If it is truely your desire to change your career, with yours skills, it would simply be a matter of " Doing It".

It seems to me that you could actually do both for a bit?

Waitressing usually provides flexible hours/sheduals?

On the other hand, you can try other positions right where your working. Why not try the mangagement positon? or Matre. D ?

Good luck

My mother left school at 14, she never even made it to high school. She is clued up about a lot of things things that you would scarcely imagine. She knows about simple book keeping, patents, grammar, photography, history, gardening, even a bit of botany and astronomy but hasn't much idea of other science though.

She did it through reading quality books. There was no TV when she was a kid and not much radio either.

Turn off the TV, get a library card and read. History, general science, non-fiction, good novels like by Jane Austen, Dickens, Robert Penn Warren. Read through the Bible and some Shakespeare as well. Don't bother with Steven King or Dan Brown, you are trying to stretch yourself a bit here.

Waitress is not the worst job in the world, but you could look around. Did you finish high school? I used to work in a chemical testing laboratory and some of the assistants had only finished high school and didn't even do chemistry or science. You just need to be quick, careful and be able to do simple arithmetic on a calculator. Waitressing might be good training for a lot of that. It's obvious that you can operate a computer. Also read a good newspaper every week.

I think more people are unhappy with their jobs than they are willing to admit. The way I see it...you really only have a few options:

1. Stay in the job you have & be happy with just that
2. Try to find a better job with the skills you do have
3. Go to College or a Technical school so you can have a career
4. Join the military. You will make a paycheck, benefits, & they will pay for you to go to school. You could join the reserves if you don't want to go active duty & leave your home.

My husband has been in the Air Force for 19 years & he loves it. The military isn't for everyone, but it is a great option when you don't feel like there are any others. You get to travel the world, meet new people, & learn new skills.

5. If none of those work then just find a rich husband to take care of you. LOL

Best of luck to you.

When I was in my early twenties, I dropped out of college, got married and started working in a series of factory jobs. I hated them. I, too, was terrified at the thought of doing that for the rest of my life. So I went back to school, got a degree, and worked my way up in a company to a job that I truly loved.

Some people really love the restaurant industry. My brother worked in it all his life. But if you don't like it now, you never will. I personally, swore that I would never work with food again unless the choice was that job or homelessness.

Its all about knowing what you want to do in life. Sometimes it takes time.

I graduated from a 4yr Art school with my BS and it turned out that I didn't want to do that, lol. I still could but its not my heart, I could have gone into sports very easily, more with my perfect size for all sports.

And now also being 26 years old my passion is medicine. And I am going back to school for Paramedics. Being part of that means something to me, its where my heart is, I have a strong desire to help people, I feel its what I am suppose to do with my life, and one day would love to be an air transport paramedic. I just wish it happened sooner, but its ok. It'll happen when it does.
My suggestion is to figure out where you have passion, and apply yourself to that, and STAY POSITIVE, if you truly believe it'll happen, then it will. And check into school.

You have done the hardest part and realised that you aren't happy and want to make a change. Now you have to find out what you would idealy like to do. Once you know then you can always find ways of getting educated in the desired field and finding that dream job. Not an easy road but definately a rewarding one if you are willing to travel it.

Feel free to contact me if you want advice on how to obtain qualifications or help finding the right career path.

Andrea. Good for you. You know what you DON'T want. Now start looking for what you DO want. If you want a way out of your soul-destroying job - get educated. There are lots of courses and evening classes around. Have a look at what's on offer and see which course you fancy. There'll be plenty of hands-on courses for people who don't like bookwork and academic courses for those who do. Learn something useful which will take your career off in a new direction. Good luck.

Your words were so sincere.
Could you go to night school?
If you are a christian girl, start each day in prayer, ask God to show you the good, being a waitress gives you so many
options to talk to people.
If school isn't possible, get your resume out there to different & better resturants, but do try going to school, you could be running that resturant Good luck my dear and
God bless.

Do you know what you want to do? If so- why aren't you doing it? find a way and make the change. If you don't find things that do interest you and always be open to new opportunities. I don't think it is a problem with you and you shouldn't have to start loving your job. Do what you want but always be in control.

There is only one person in the world who can make you happy, and that's YOU. Ask yourself, what do you want to do, and don't let anybody detract you from your goal.
The boxer, Muhamed Ali once told a little boy, "even if I was a dustman, I would have been the best dustman in the world".
I think he got it right.
