Please give details in your answer - country, date, etc. I don't know of any other time in history that such a horrible attack took place on civilians with a plane or jet.
What kind of security could have prevented such a horrendous crime?

Clarity in my question:
90,000 L gallons of jet fuel, comprising nearly 1/3 of the aircraft’s weight, ignited upon impact. This was a plane that had just taken off and was full of fuel - not one crossing an ocean to hit a building with an empty fuel tank.

How about what other Steel Buildings have pancaked collapse due to fire as the WTC buildings did.
BTW---No security could have prevented the attack. Cause it was an inside job. Why else would our Air Command take the day off, be late when our jets can reach mach+ speeds, president reads to the kiddies.........connect the dots, follow the money and anyone with a 3rd grade education can easily see it's all b.s
In addition, if you watched it live and taped the major networks, it's funny how Bush and friends had to back pedal on info given as truth on live TV.......happen way too many times....

Prior to 9-11, no commercial plane had ever been used to attack a building in such a manner.
How can it be prevented?
Continued surveillance and constant vigilance.

Well a B-17 hit the Empire State Building back in the 30's. That was an accident tho.

1 October from South Africa. I believe that a plane have hit the Empire State building, but with not such devastation as the Twin Towers. And further to my knowledge it's the first attact of it's kind in history, apart from the attacts during World War 2. There are no security for these kind of people are infiltrating the world in the name of their god and religion. But it's only cheep coward attacts on Innocent humans in the name of Allah! And i believe that Allah would totally disagree with their methods and they would go and please explain someday to Him!

Can't remember exactly where or when it happened but remember that kid that flew a crop duster into a building. It didn't cause too much damage but they did some huge investigation about proactive and it's link to depression because of it.
And you can't really prevent things like this from happening. America is all about freedom and opportunity and we gave those terrorists the opportunity to learn how to fly those planes on our soil at our schools. Our country is great because of it but it will be our downfall at the same time. Terrorism will always exist because there is always a way to terrorize a country.

Never happened before.
Currently we would shoot down a hijacked airliner before such an event could occur.
But... could you imagine if we had shot down the 9-11 jets!?!?

the WTC towers were designed to withstand the impact of a fuel laden Boeing 707 -so its structure shouldn't have come down nor was the fuel fire hot enough to melt the steel.
