Pom's just a nick name for brit. It's got no meaning positive or negative... It may have when it first came about but nowadays it's just like calling new zealanders kiwis...

Pimp is a USA term and should, in no way be confused with the word pom (endearing term for convict ancestors relocated to a better part of the world)
Be sure to clear that up with the kiddies
and point out..... England needs good cricketers!

We call brits "poms" but it is not a derogatory term. As the answerer said above - it is just a nickname Like now, with the world cup rugby - we might use it as "when Australia beat the Poms...." (of course, it can be used both positive and negative way - such as "whinging poms").

There is no nastiness attached.

30 years ago an Englishman I knew here had a T-shirt with a Union Jack on it and the words "Pommy Bastard". He had a strong Home Counties accent too. Nobody bothered him unless he bothered them first. It just means "English person" and the intent is delivered by the tone of voice or the associated adjectives.

I don't use it as it as it is liable to misinterpretation. I work with a young woman born along the Rhone Valley in France. I don't call her "froggy" .
