I'll give you bunch of common excuses...

- God's plan.

- Free-will.

- Everything happens for a reason.

If all above doesn't work then... Mysterious ways.

Many people have asked the questions like:
Why does God allow wars?
Why was this person born blind?
Why is this person crippled?
Why can't this couple have children?

These are some of the mysteries about which humans have been asking God for answers since the beginning of time.

Even Job, a just man, asked God why were so many bad things happening to him.

I am not wise enough to answer this question but Pope John Paul II wrote a beautiful letter called Salvifici Doloris, On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_11021984_salvifici-doloris_en.html

With love in Christ.

A believer myself, I know that good people are not exempt from the trials and tragedies of life. I know the book of James speaks of this and I'm sure others do also. It is not God's intention to punish everyone, nor does He have poor aim. His judgement is perfect always. It is not blind acceptance, it is factual. God loves us but a father who loves his children disciplines them. I know people die and it is sorrowful, but how else do you get to heaven (or Hell for that matter)? Nobody has ever gotten out of life alive; think about that. In terms of general misfortune we all experience, the Bible says that what Satan means for our harm God will use for our good. Don't be bitter over the hardships because without struggle there is no progress, and without progress there is no success. We live in a generation where society views hard work or struggle as a negative thing. We all don't need to be pathetic burden-bearers, downtrodden and with an overly humbled attitude. We are more than conquerors through Christ who strengthens us. How can you know Christ as a deliverer without needing deliverence? The old saying is, "Who needs God when life is good?" Although that is not a reverent statement, it goes to show that it is through the storms of life that we are forced to seek God when most people would care less otherwise. God is patient with his thick-headed children. He's got forever. Without struggles we would remain weak, stagnant, pathetic, self-centered, and useless to God. You choose your perspective each day when you wake. The way you see the problem is your problem. You can see the good that comes out of it and put your faith in God or you can be bitter and put your faith in the very temporary, limited wisdom of mankind that "seeks what their itching hears want to hear." Make the Godly choice. Trust Him and know that His wisdom and knowledge greatly surpasses our own. I mean, we know only what we hear or see a few inches from our face, but God sees all and knows all. Also, keep in mind that in order to answer someone else's prayer, God might need to make some adjustments that you don't like. When He answers some of your prayers, they may require sacrifices from others you would never realize.

Bad things happen to good people because humans invite evil into the world, and unfortunately, this evil frequently lands on undeserving people.

We must never forget that God has the ability to bring good consequences out of even the most evil circumstances.

I have seen this in my own life....and we can all see it in the aftermath of 9-11

The best answer for this troubling theological question "Why do bad things happen to good people" that I have ever heard goes like this:

GOD did create a world where bad things never happen to good people; a world with no war, no famine, no disease; a world of no pain, no suffering, no tears; a world where everything will be made right.

It's called HEAVEN. And instead of asking why earth can't be more like HEAVEN - the real question we need to be asking ourselves is "How do we get to HEAVEN?"

Doesn't it make you wonder?

My answer relating to God the father (although that term sounds more mainstream christian than it sounds catholic at all..);

He does not exist.

Good and bad people experience windfalls and disasters. Most of these experiences are the results of our own doing, not the result of some level of Divine intervention.

Regardless of the times, it's important that we all remember to give thanks to God.

Job too was a God fearing man and he too suffer! Why? When the body suffer(physical), God becomes greater in our hearts( spiritually)!

Maybe there will be some good consequence that we cannot foresee. Like Joseph being thrown in the well, sold as a slave, thrown in prison, and Joseph never did anything wrong, but God intended it for the saving of many lives.
