My wisdom tooth is coming through and I'm pretty sure I have a bad infection with it - I can't open my mouth very far and I'm in pain from the top of my cheek to my neck and I can't swallow very well. I'm not registered to any dentist at the moment so would I have to register with someone to get it seen to (And will it be expensive??) or can I go to my doctor?
Also, if worst comes to worst and I have to get it removed, can I insist that I get it done under general anaesthetic because I'm absolutely petrified of procedures at the dentist while I'm awake??

Thanks!

I would see a dentist but in the end, if it needs to be removed, you'll need an oral surgeon. You could start at your doctor's office and maybe they can refer straight to an oral surgeon if that is what you need.

Go see an oral surgeon, they do this all day every day. They also can remove teeth under IV sedation, while general dentists can not. A lot of the time, it ends up being less expensive seeing a specialist anyways since they don't have to bill you for as much time as a dentist would (it takes an oral surgeon a fraction of the time to remove a tooth that would take a dentsit 30-60 minutes to remove).

If its definitely your wisdom tooth you will have to see a dentist.

With regards to having it removed, not sure if you can insist on general anaesthetic, but as you'll be paying for it you should certainly make your fear clear.

You should certainly see a dentist as soon as possible. To warn you though - I had a wisdom tooth that grew into my cheek and I left it until the point where I couldn't open my mouth without the tooth ripping my cheek before I went - I was quite shocked when he took it out there and then!

I would see a dentist. Ring NHS Direct and they should be able to give you the emergency number for the dentist that will see you.
Your local hospital may also have an emergency dentist?
Try not to worry too much.

You really need to see a dentist. Don't keep suffering it as the pain probably won't go away until the tooth is removed.

You will have to see a dentist first for a check up and to treat any infection (dentists can issue prescriptions). Then,if needed, you get a referral to a specialist.Good luck.

you can go to a dental hospital as a emergency, doctors wont do anything as it does sound like a wisdom tooth infection, you would need anti-biotics to clear the infection then to consider having the tooth removed.
if you go to a dental hospital sometimes its free. the one in newcastle is.
hope this helps xx
