I have a 2001 ford ranger 4cyl, 5sp standard bed, and just picked up a 12ft (looks smaller) 1965 Santa Fe camp trailer. I towed it home no problem, but the trailer hitch is too low, and makes the rear end of the trailer visibly hang down. is this a bad way to tow it? Is there some way to mount a lower ball on the "step bumper" of my 2001 ranger? I went to
Walmart and they had some 2 1/2 inch "drop down" parts, but the "bolt hole" in those are horizontal, ie, that part would not hook to my bumper where the current ball is....any ideas please?

In ideal conditions, the trailer should sit level when being towed, with 15-20% of the total trailer weight resting on the hitch. You need to install a frame mounted receiver hitch on your Ranger, and then go for the "drop down" or adjustable height hitch drawbar to lower the front of the trailer.

Best to get a frame mounted hitch with a drop receiver to get the correct height. You could try a trailer sales or hitch company and see if they offer a drop type setup for a step bumper that would fit yours. Or have a new tongue welded to the trailer to raise it up enough to use your step bumper.
