I want to create a drop-down list in a cell that changes the values of other cells to a predetermined value. Basically, I am attempting to make a comparison sheet that lets me pick an element on a list that allows for a quick comparison of their values in a small space so I don't have to scroll all the way to the other side of the page to verify numbers.

Ex.

If the list on A1 reads mercury, then that would set A2, A3, and A4 to display preset numbers. But if the list reads Helium, then A2, A3, and A4 would display a different set of pre-set numbers.

So...how can I create the function I need? :)

Well sarangu, that would be because microsoft is notorious for either only putting help topics in on issues that no real person ever has, or just hiding the topic you need really well. :)

You can create a drop down list and then use the vlookup function in the cells to the right.

Read help for both.

Your existing list can be used to create the drop down, and as long as the other data is in the columns to the right of the list values then vlookup will work with that same array.

Or you might consider just using a window split - then you can see both areas at the same time.

The option that comes to mind is the built in function of the AutoFilter.

AutoFilter will permit you to view the desired data in a view which hides the unneeded rows in your list.

Select Data menu.
Select AutoFilter
The table displays with drop down arrows.
Select the field you wish to filter by its arrow and pick a value.
The record which matches appears with all others hidden.

Note: To remove the filter option:
Select the Data menu.
Deselect AutoFilter.

Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe - best historical fiction I've ever read. The Swan Thieves - Elizabeth Kostova - another historical fiction (artsy, post-French Revolution) but it's an undertaking. Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte - is also a good historical fiction. Dragon Prince series - Melanie Rawn - my favorite fantasy novels but they involve a lot of politics. Game of Throne books (A Song of Fire and Ice series) - amazing once you skip past the first chapter of the first book because it's so out of place it doesn't make any sense.

To create a drop-down list, go to data -> validation ->allow-List
select the list you want in your drop down list - ok.

use 'vlookup' formulae to get the pre-set values
