Well, I'm teaching myself Italian and I've found it really helpful to read the newspapers, listen to Italian radio stations, and chat online with people in Italy.. Also, I teach English and it's very important to read/speak out loud so you can hear yourself and your pronunciation.

I'm Italian and I'm posting on this Y/A (almost exclusively on this US section...!!) since about 1 year ago. Very frankly speaking I have started already from a good base since I've studied very deeply English language at my school in Italy(unfortunately a longtime ago..!!) and still I'm using it in my job as my primary foreign language, but I must admit that I've improved it really a lot by reading answers and answering questions here on the US section of Y/A.
It must be clear that not everybody here is posting without mistakes as a lot of English native speakers are using too much slang (or sometime incorrect constructions) but if your bases are good enough to make them out and your goal is to improve yr fair English I feel your best bet is to follow my way. This is in my opinion far better than reading papers or listening the radio/tv. Another option for you could be to start a correspondence with somebody but I feel this could be ok just for a few days; after then I guess it will be really boring for both of you. That's a limit that you'll never have here on Y/A since if you like you can read and answer a bunch of sentences, but if you don't, nobody will be harassing you.
