place the knife on the plate with the sharp side facing to the middle of the plate, then place the fork next to the sharp side of the knife with the tines pointed downward onto the plate. The server in a good restaurant will know you have finished and may remove the plate without asking.

The point is to make a signal that the server understands so that there doesn't NEED to be a conversation about whether you are finished or not and interrupt the conversation that you are having with the other guests. Dinner etiquette serves a purpose, to make fun of something because one doesn't understand it, is very ignorant (I'm directing this at other Answerers, not you for your question).

Keep them in crossed position at the lower end of the plate closer to you with face of the fork downwards.

Totally on the plate if you're finished. Resting on the plate with the handle on the table if you are not.

When you have finished eating, and to let the waiter and others know that you have, place your knife and folk together, with the prongs (tines) on the fork facing upwards, on your plate!!!

God' s truth, as if it really matters. The old etiquette was to place them together if you'd finished and to put them in an inverted V if you hadn't finished.

These days any half-decent waiter will ask if you've finished.
