My entire life I've been a night owl no matter what I do to try to change that. I am wired between 10 pm and 2 am, but in the mornings I am so groggy and fatigued. I've tried everything (going to bed early, wearing myself out, even pills to induce sleep, but no matter how many years I have to get up for an early job, it's always a horrible experience and I'm always energetic late at night. Is there a genetic reason night owls are what they are?? Are brains just wired to be either night or morning people?

I used to be the same way, but my job has forced me into a somewhat regular schedule ( although the weekends always throw me off). I don't know if you drink coffee or caffeine, but I have a strict rule about no caffeine after 2 pm. Then I try to eat 3 hours before bedtime and I have a relaxing ritual before bed ( a warm shower, a cup of decaf tea, and I always read something light hearted- a fluffy book, a magazine, etc). I make sure that I am actually in bed by no later than 10. Usually I am asleep after 15 minutes of reading.

I also make sure that I am active during the day- I at least take a walk or have regular exercise. Avoid vigorous exercise close to your bed time though.

Hope these tips help!

It's not unusual, thats why there are shift workers, cause they can't sleep either, been there and have done that, I lie awake most of the time myself, the doctor said that I need Sleep because I have Meniere's Disease, so he prescribed a valium 5mg per night, and I sleep alot better, I still wake up and go to the toilet, but I go straight back to sleep now, before, I'd be awake for hours, just get back to sleep and it was time to get up. There are no rules about sleeping, just cause its night time doesn't mean you have to sleep or anything, a lot of people are awake at night and I think that they are getting more and more all the time. Make sure it's not stress related etc., try a valerian tablet, it's herbal, if that doesn't work, see the doctor, he might be able to help you to get into a pattern and thats really important. Goodluck to you, I hope u get the answers u need.

These are just suggestions but its worth a try. I read that our body rejuvenate between 11PM-5AM. Most importantly between 12-1AM. Sorry for those night shifts. Try turning the lights off at 9PM, total darkness makes you produce melatonin (melatonin helps you sleeps), you can take melatonin tablet, its safe and natural, avoid coffee, chocolate, tea, energy drinks and caffienated soda. Eat 3 hours before bedtime. Take a warm bath, and shut everything off from your mind, no thinking, not even happy thoughts. Like hypnotizing yourself to sleep. It works! 7 days of continuous routine makes it a habit. Good luck!

Good question. And here I am at 4:53 a.m. answering you. I would love to be an early bird. But I find myself as a night owl.
I believe that some of it is environmental.
But they say that it takes 7 days for something to become a habit. Try seriously for 7 days to change it and maybe you can. (I work a night job myself....or believe me I would try)

Good Luck!

i think our sleeping patterns are determined by habit rather than genetics. i have noticed that children whose parents woke them up as a baby at a regular time each day eg for feeding, are better at sleeping through the night because through habit their body clock sleeps during this time. my parents did not feed me at any regular time as a baby, rather whenever i woke up, and as a kid i would stay up reading all night and thus my body clock is all screwed. i am wired from 9pm-1am and then it takes me an hour at least to go to sleep. i have tried herbal sleeping treatments, going to bed early, etc but nothing works. my mind is just too activ.e

I know exactly what you mean! No matter how tired I am during the day, come 10ish, I'm so awake and full of energy and it lasts until around 2. Just about every night. I'll be so tired the next day...tell myself in the morning that I'll go to bed earlier, but nope...wide awake.

I have the same thing if it's dark I'm awake and alive, but it's nearly impossible to sleep. On weekends i can sleep 6 hours but not until it's morning i feel like I'm nocturnal.
