well i was telling my older sister about me wanting to change my 12 week old puppy's diet. he is on kibble now and i am very interested in RAW.... but i havent made the change because i want to look in to that more. (i know VERY little) so today i went out and my sister was cooking with chicken breast... i guess she decided to let him try a WHOLE piece of chicken breast!! when i got home my younger sister who is 7years old ran up to me and told me that puppy loved the raw chicken with skin and bones, and that he wanted more, but my sister cooked it all!!! i was kind of freaking out a little, well alot!! seeing that he had ate kibble before he got the chicken. i got upset at my sister because i am not sure if that is okay.... so please, if you know anything about my question let me know!!
thanks

Raw Chicken Is Perfectly OK For Your Puppy Darl. We Have A 16wk Old Boarder Collie Called Breeze And Have Been Feeding Her Raw Chicken Wings Most Of The Time We've Had Her. The Bones Are Soft Enough Not To Cause Any Problems But As Is Mentioned By Someone Else Cooked Bones Can Be A Problem As They Are Hard And Brittle So May Splinter When Chewed. Raw Meat Is Better For Dogs In General And A Marrow Bone Once In A While As A Chew Toy Is A Healthy Treat.
Good Luck With Your Puppy Training. Have A Beaut Gooday.

Raw chicken meat is great for dogs. Its a good way to get protein in their diet, and the bones dont splinter when they are raw. Your little man is probably in love with your sister now. No amount of raw food is going to make your dog 'mean' as some other people have said ... how ridiculous. Dogs are designed to eat raw meat, not kibble. But kibbles a fine addition ... but its not enough on its own.

Its fine.

The bones will break, not splinter as long as theyre raw.

Amount of food was probably too much, but no big deal.

Only other issue is the different digestive rates of the kibble vs. the chicken. Dogs are much less likely to get diseases from raw food than people are, but the chance is still there. Mixing with foods that digest at different rates nullifies some of the dog's natural ability to fight the diseases. Try not to feed raw and kibble close together if youre doing both.

And of course, make sure she knows not to do that ever again. No one should ever be giving your pup anything without first making sure its ok with you.

At this age be sure her diet is well balanced for puppes. I think you've answered your own question with "She has TINY puppy teeth and her mouth is mostly gums". I would pull the meat off the bones for now because if her mouth is mostly gums she'll never be able to crunch and eat the bones. At this time make sure she's getting vitamins/minerals in some other form. Instead of feeding just chicken/bones/meat what about going to the pre-made (including ground bones) raw until she is older. There are many various "raw" food sites I suggest you ask them. Also some pups/dogs just don't like raw food, possibly your IG is one of those. I believe their adult teeth start to come is around 4-5 months that may vary with the breed. Good luck

I feed my 2 dogs on the BARF (Bones and Raw Feed) Diet, and its the best thing i ever fed a dog!
I used to feed dogs kibble, tinned food etc. and this is an excellent diet.
A good book to read is: "Give Your Dog A Bone" by Dr Ian Billinghurst, its a bit repetitive but it clearly outlines the benefits and myths (including that raw chicken bones splinter! complete myth)
The best place to get your meat from is your local butchers, as they will give the majority of it to u for free, because meat they cant sell has to be paid to be removed.
I feed them on chicken wings, chicken throat, meat, meaty bones etc, offal meal (every over week), vegetables, rice etc.
I make it all up, portion it and freeze it, then get it out as i feed them their previous meal.
I have fed my border terrier puppy on it since she was 4 months, and shes thrived on it. My JRT used top suffer with tummy problems, know she doesn't.
Feel free to contact me for any more info.

he will be fine.. raw foods are digestable. Some people do feed a mix of raw and kibble. The worst that could happen is that your pup had too much to eat at one time (depending on the size of your pup) and may have some tummy ache from that.

If you want to learn more about raw feeding, searchon the yahoo groups for raw feeding or BARF diets.. they will be veryhelpful in answering any questions or concerns you have about raw diets.

edited to add...RAW bones do not splinter! Cooked bones do! A dog is not likely to get bacteria infections from eating raw meat.. their digestive systems were designed for raw meat, ours are not really designed for meat at all! They have a stronger sotmache acid and different intestinal flora than we do, which is designed for digesting meat and bones. Dogs didnt eat commercialized dog fooduntil sometime in the 70's.. what do you think they ate until then?

raw food will not make a dog mean! There are many people who feed thier dogs raw meat, and they are as sweet as ever! I feed mine raw chicken guts/parts on occasion and they are as sweet as ever.

It is probably a lot better for your pup than kibble!
Chicken is so young when it is killed for eating nowadays that dogs can digest the bones very easily.
If it is raw it is fine, as long as your dog doesn't get any cooked bones.
Bruce doesn't know what he is talking about!

Many large dog breeders feed raw chicken as the main source of food in their dog's diet.

Some say it's better to feed them raw chicken than their own dog food. :)

i wouldn't worry about it today but it would be better if the chicken was cooked and minus the bones but at this age dogs can now start to try new things but just watch that it does'nt effect its tummy as it can get tummy aches.it is best to keep it on the same type of diet and not change it to dramatically.
