I am looking for some cat/vet experts who can help me with the following. My cat has been very unwell for the last 3 weeks whereby she is going round the house and basically leaking pooh everywhere and is obviously in a lot of discomfort as she is acting very strange. I have been to the vets about 5 times and to be honest I don't think they have a clue what is wrong with her as one minute they will say it is gastroenteritis and then another time will say it is an infection. Over the last 3 weeks my cat has lost nearly a kilo in weight and is not herself at all. Can anyone help as I am genuinely getting worried about her.

i suggest to go to another vet and get a second opinion

I would go to a vet- preferably another vet who specialises in cats and dogs and small house animals - not all vets are some are more interested in live stock etc and do pets as a sideline. Go to another vet and start from scratch. If you are insured I would ask for every test under the sun! I would also start with maybe taking a diary too just in case it is something like a houseplant she has eaten or even a change ion diet. Some cats can get very upset tummies if they are fed milk etc as they are lactose intolerant. I am wondering if anyone in the neighbourhood is feeding her thinking she looks thin. Keep her indoors and change vets get a stool sample on your first consultation and fingers crossed. Good luck.
p.s. Grilled chicken and cooked rice is excellent at firming up the bowel if needs be. mix them together and serve as normal food a bit warm not too hot.

Hello Pete,

There could be several things causing this problem and I'm afraid no-one here can diagnose it without examination and tests.

I had a similar problem with an ill cat and took him to the same surgery 3 times. Each time I saw a different vet and was told my cat was suffering from different ailments and was given different treatments.

My pet got no better and so I decided to seek another opinion at a different surgery.

That vet took a sample (in my pets case it was an eye problem) and got it tested. Within a couple of days the vet found out what the problem was and gave me the correct medication. Within a few days my cat was well again.

If your vet has not got a sample of you cats stool and tested it, I would want to know why.

It may be an idea to seek a second opinion.

The very best of luck to you and your pet. I hope all is well with her.

You cat needs to be on Pro-Pectalin (anti-diarrheal med for cats & dogs) .....I am surprised your vet has not given you some already.....therefore I agree that your cat is in need of the right vet.....where I live everyone seems to know by word of mouth which vet specializes in cats while another dogs, horses etc.

Call some pet groomers and pet sitters from your phone book and see who they and their clients seemt o recommend, also your local SPCA, Humane Society, County Animal Control office....or possibly pet store owner may even know know.

When enough people tell you, I will NEVER take my cat to
Dr. One but he's great with my birds.....you'll know where NOT to take your cat....and can also find the right vet the same way.....if there is a local clinic with more than one vet at the same office, I would try there first.

Good Luck and keep your cat hydrated with plenty of water & food. Also, if a cat eats ONLY canned food with no dry, they will get diarreah....add some dry.

3 weeks is 3 weeks too long for an animal to suffer. If you're not satisfied with one vet, you find another one and get a second opinion. You don't wait so long and just watch your cat fade away. When are animal owners going to realise that when they get a pet they are totally responsible for that animal's life and welfare. There are so many who without realising it are totally neglectful and allowing their pets to suffer unnecessarily. OK you did the right thing in the beginning by taking it to a vet, but if you took a child to a doctor and weren't happy with the treatment, you'd get a second opinion, you'd move heaven and earth to find out what was wrong and get it treated. Animals deserve no less. In fact they deserve more because they aren't able to tell us where or how much they hurt.

This is very concerning.

Dehydration is the first concern.

Your cat needs to be admitted to a vet to stay and be put on a drip and carry out culture studies on the stool, blood tests and x-ray.

Does the stool look black or does it smell really foul? It the stool tainted with blood or mucous? Has the cat got a temperature? Is it less active? Is it eating and drinking? Has it been poisoned - have you or your neighbours been using any weedkillers, pesticides, baits etc?

Cases like this where the vets have done what they should and still no results can point to poisoning.

Keep your cat OFF meat. try boiled cod .feed her twice a day small amounts to start with.
Stop any other treats including biscuits,
I'm presuming she doesn't go out while shes not well. so making sure fish is all she has ,it will settle her tum.
I sometimes do wonder if a lot of vets out there give a hoot.you pay through the nose for their services and end up solving the problem you self.
Good luck.

PLEASE take your little cat to another vet. We used to take our cat to a vet miles away, then started going to a vet much nearer to home, the staff were all female (?) but they sorted out all the problems our cat had, and he lived until he was 21. You have to take her somewhere else, ask around for advice and opinions on other vets, but 3 weeks is too long for a cat to be poorly, and she relies on you, she can't take herself off to someone to get diagnosed.

I wonder if the cat has had an x-ray>At least get a second opinion from another vet sooner rather than later-I know they are expensive !

Get a 2nd opinion right away, get friends neighbours to recommend one if possible. I did and I got better and cheaper vet care for my diabetic cat!

i would try putting it on a plain diet and make sure it has plenty of fresh water.with the food i would just feed it dry food. if the poo all over the place is a problem you could make a nappy for it to keep the poo in one place remember to leave a hole for its tail.if that does'nt work after a week as it has already been sick for long enough 1 week more isn't going to hurt then i would take it to another vet.
