A raw gas odor indicates a leak of some sort--better have a mechanic check the entire fuel system and try to pinpoint where it smells the strongest. Could be leaking from a line or hose connection in a hidden area or a vent hose/line may be ruptured or broken but that would usually give an odor all the time. Charcoal vapor cannisters sometimes will give off fumes without a visible leak...they are designed to capture gas vapors in the fuel system and can sometimes get clogged up enough to release the vapors to the atmosphere which may be what you're smelling.

the leak is probably the fuel pressure regulator or a leaking injector seal look for a clean area around the fuel lines, fuel washes away dirt and grime
