I am suffering from swelling, bleeding of gums for the past 2-3 yrs. Now my dentist say that I have to undergo flap surgery in 2 places in my gums since the gap between the tooth and the gum is more. I need more info on this issue and also the pros and cons of undergoing the surgery. I would also like to have a second opiniopn from any other dentist. Kindly help.

Since you admit suffering from gum disease for the last 2-3 years, it is no wonder what your dentist has advised is right. However, a second opinion done with specialist periodontist always clears any doubts. Periodontal Flap surgery is recommended in many cases where pocketing depths have reached a level that makes maintenance or cleansing difficult. Sometimes, gingival flap surgery is performed in conjunction with osseous surgery which involves removing or reshaping inflamed bone. Search for affordable specialist periodontal care in your city.

Sounds like you have advance peridontal disease. At this point when you have a lot of gap between the gum and tooth, there isn't much else to do.

By all means get a second even a third opinion if it helps you.

I have nothing against general dentist but it is better to ask a referral to a very COMPETENT periodontist in your neighbourhood.

Periodontist can help you a lot in reducing periodontal pockets,.eliminate bleeding by several procedures like:

1. curettage
2. open flap surgery or even bone graft.

Think about it. If $ is not in question go for it.
