I'm waiting on the vet's opinion right now.. but has anyone else had this problem? She suddenly developed strong pains, and hasn't thrown up or pooed, but her appetite is normal. She is also on a raw diet, and ate a chicken leg quarter last night, a drumstick this morning, and a quarter again tonight. The pains started around 3 pm. Anyone else who has fed/feeds raw see this in their dogs? The vet doesn't think it's bloat.. No haters on the raw diet, please.

I thought her leg was hurting, because she went to jump on the bed, and she whined/yelped. then, I picked her up with my arm under her tummy, and she yelped again.. As a pit bull, she's great at hiding pain.. so this is worrisome!

Well, as I said I'm at work, and she's with a staff vet right now. So, if it is back pain, I will be sure to update. I palpatated her intestinal area myself, and could not locate any sort of lump, but I could tell that was hurting her.

thx nekki. she is spayed, and I'll have them look at her urine as well as her blood if the x-rays/exams are inconclusive.

if her appetite is normal and she's not throwing up.. how do you know she is in pain? What are her symptoms?

how long has she been on the raw diet?

are you sure its tummy pain, and not her back? Ussually when a dog has abdominal pain they walk with a hunched back.

Im glad to hear she is with a vet staff.. ask them to do a urinal too.. to rule out any infections. Is she fixed? If not you may want the vet to check her for uterine infections as well.

Ugh so many people who have not studied the raw diet to understand it.. they go by the old "dogs cant have bones" concept! RAW bones are fine.. they do not splinter! They are digestable! Dogs ate raw food for thousands of years, up until about the 70's when they started making commercialized diets! Its the cooked bones that become brittle and can splinter and perforate the intestines!

There is also minimal risk of bacteria infections with raw feeding. We cannot eat raw meat, but our digestive tracts were also not designed for meat! Dogs have stronger stomache acids, and also different intestinal flora, which is designed to break down and digest raw meat, as well as any bacteria that is typically found in meat! A dog's digestive tract is also much shorter than ours.. what may take us a day or two to digest, will take a dog a few hours to digest!

I hope they figure out what is going on.. have them check her back as well.. its possible she has something going on there and its causing discomfort.

It could very well be a bone in her intestinal tract. I'm very surprised you feed her chicken bones of any kind as they splinter and cause major problems that require surgery to correct. They perforate the bowel and stomach, which could cause your dog to bleed to death internally. If you feed you dog a raw diet cut the chicken from the bone first.

Please don't misunderstand, but there are too many microbial problems with a raw diet. Salmonella is one. I love dogs and I plead with you to reconsider your choice.
However, did you get an xray to make sure the dog did not swallow something indigestible?
