Last night I had a heated disagreement with my girlfreind because she insisted that I was displaying bad manners by drinking a glass of water while eating dinner at our home. This really surprised me as I had never heard of this before. The only two reasons she provided for this was that it promoted lazy chewing and was bad for diggestion.

is it bad manners to burp out loud on the dinner table?
not if you do it in some place in Europe, where it is considered a compliment to your host..

the point is, what is good or what is bad may vary depending on culture, tradition, background and I guess upbringing, which in your case.. the latter applies to your predicament...

as far practicality is concerned, would you rather choke than have a drink of water while still in the middle of your meal... now if you would do that then your probably acting silly, and if your hosts would expect you to do that (choke) for as long as you don't offend them, then they are being ridiculous...

I had a cousin who also was not allowed to drink water while still in the middle of a meal..

It really depends on what people are taught as right or wrong when growing up, its the kind f values they assimilate..

relationships get complicated when two people have different sets of "right or wrongs" and have different value systems, sometimes you think that the other person's (their family included) have a pretty much skewed up sense of values...

if your serious about the girl... be ready to make adjustments and compromise, otherwise go find another girl witha family that pretty much has the same right or wrong.. or similar value systems such as you and your family so you can avoid such situations which will only make your married life more difficult

Good Luck!

Manners While Eating

All restaurants that I have ever been in always provide a glass for water and wine. at home we always have something to drink at the table, breakfast, coffee, tea, orange. lunch is wine or water or both, dinner wine and water. Your girl friend has it all wrong, here in France we have a spirit made from apples called Calvados it is called a 'tru Normandie' or the Normandy hole it is taken between courses to promote digestion, eat drink and bon appetite

When I was growing up my father insisted that we never drink anything until we finished eating. Now he had been a drill instructor in the Marine Corp and I attributed his attitude about this to that experience.

Personally, I think it makes sense to clean the pallet between different types of food to better taste and enjoy the individual flavors they offer. The Japanese do this with pickled ginger when they eat sushi.

I don't like people blowing their noses at the table. But I had no idea it was a medical reason. SORRY I will try to be more understanding in the future. But other than that I know someone who eats off of other people's plates and without asking. I hate that. And I know someone who talks with their mouth full and food is always on the sides of her mouth, and chin YUCK! I hate that.

Drinking while eating aids digestion and cleans the palate. Wine and food go so well together that dishes are created to go with particular wines. Your girlfriend is sadly misinformed - and extremely rude for pointing out your supposed bad manners.

Absolutely not.

Lazy chewing? I highly doubt whether you drink water or not will greatly influence that.

As for being bad for digestion, I don't think that's true at all, I've never heard of such a thing. From my own experience, drinking while eating aids in digestion.

First I've heard of that. She is mistaken.

Most formal meals are served with water and/or wine either or both to be consumed with the food. The standard was white wines with fowl or fish, red with with beef, mutton or pork. A sweet wine may be served with dessert.

In less formal settings or with particular types of food e.g. German dishes the wine may be replaced with beer.
