tonite when I went to get his shot records and his tags from the garage, everything is missing. I have 1 invoice from the vet I accidentally left in my car last month. Can I go to the courthouse animal control office and get his records to prove he is my dog? I suspect my son has taken the stuff home with him and left me high and dry. He thinks the dog is his, but left him behind when he moved out a year ago. He will not answer his phone.
Will I have problems getting my dog back in the morning without his papers and tags?

He just got new tags about 3 weeks ago and I stuck them in the garage because I could not find a pair of plyers to get them on. They are green this year.

If he was picked up by the pound, they need to see proof of rabies and proof of liscensing. These are the only two things, that by law, you must have on your dog. The pound's not going to care whether he has Lymes vaccination or not. You can get the first one from the vet, the second one from either your town hall or the county.
If you don't have your dog liscensed, call them up. At the pound I work at, we actually don't have a policy on releasing unliscenced dogs. It can vary - from not being able to get your dog to being fined in addition to pound fees for breaking the law.
And my suggestion - pick him up ASAP. Pound fees are like boarding fees. They can be expensive, and the total raises everyday the dog's there.

Contact the Vet that gave the shots and get that Vet to fax you the records to take to the city pound with you. Ask the Vet to add your name as owner. You could have problems if you can't get the records. Depending on where you live, you might have to pay for his quarantine for a few weeks and then for getting his shots and city tags before he is released to you. Some places may force you to neuter your dog if he is not already, and they can keep your dog if you are unable to prove your dog lives where he is properly contained before he is returned to you. These are just possibilities. You might not run into these problems. Call the city pound where he is at and ask what you need to provide. Tell them your story and see what you will need. GL!

Animal controls typically charge per day, much like if they were boarding your animal for you. Most animal controls have laws that say they must hold the animal for so many days to give the owner a chance to find him before the animal is put up for adoption.
If the animal is in Stray Hold, you will go to the shelter and describe your pet. They will let you see the strays. If you see your dog and it's a match with what you told them, you'll get him back. You will pay the "boarding fee", possibly a fee for them having to pick him up, and, if you don't have proof that he got a rabies shot, you'll have to pay for him to get his shot again.
If they do require proof that he is your dog they will call your vet. If the vet has a record of the rabies shot from the last year, you have proof. If they don't, he'll need a new rabies shot anyway.
If the animal is up for adoption, than you can just adopt him again. Most times it is cheaper to just re-adopt than to pay all the fees for him being held so long.

The vet has all the records for the dog. they will give you a copy. Plus take a picture of the dog with you. They do not want to keep the dog but just make sure the dog is taken care of. How did the dog get loose and what precautions will you take to secure the dog? What type of dog do you have? Is it a dog that people would fear? These are questions they may ask you. Your son must not love the dog that much if he risks the dogs life by taking all the info you have for him and not the dog. Call the people that took your dog and ask what is it you need to bring to pick up your dog?

If you registered him this year you can get a record of that at the county offices (animal control). You can also get a replacement tag for a small fee there also. If he is indeed registered, they will have his up-to-date immunization records recorded also. This is a requirement to get his tags. You shouldn't have to contact your vet for anything. This should be all you need to get your poor pooch out of the hooch! And next time, keep a better handle on him so he doesn't get picked up. This is traumatic for any dog to be taken to an unknown place with unknown people and feeling so alone.

If he is not neutered you might have to pay for that on your way out also. Take pics of the dog with you, and check with your vet for records. Find a way form him to safer from outside elements (dog catcher).
Best of Luck!
