Chris, the answer to that one is complex, and deserves some reading on your part. It's an excellent way to learn history!
I've got to warn you though, as a history teacher I can tell you this is one of the most loaded topics in human history! In order to get the answer you seek, you're not only going to have to learn the series of events leading back to the late 19th century, you're going to have to understand the context of the setting that is Palestine.
Here's a short answer for you though: The various Jewish founders, backers and British and American powers who helped create the new Israel (at the end of WWI) took land from people who were living in the region at the time. Promises were made by those powers to the Palestinians which were NOT kept, and eventually, the desire of the Jewish people to expand and consolidate their fledgling nation led to tremendous violence and as a result, MILLIONS of Palestinians became refugees from their own country, a country which, some argue never existed, except as a mere "region" where Arab tribes lived (there were no lines on the map prior to the end of WWI, but that didn't stop Arabs from building towns and farms).
Now, Israel is home to 2 million Jews and is surrounded by 200 million angry Arabs. Israel is supported by the U.S., who gives them a TREMENDOUS amount of money every year (3 billion), plus Abrams tanks, attack helicopters, etc. which the Jews use to attack and destroy Palestinian civilian targets. Pretty horrible, huh? To make matters worse, anyone who criticizes Israel for this is immediately labeled an "anti-semite".
In short, Israel is wealthy and powerful and tremendously influential and very ambitious to take control of the Middle East. The Palestinians are poor, homeless, and embrace a very violent religion that teaches them to attack the infidels with whatever they have, even suicide bombing.
There have been so many atrocities on both sides, that peace is nearly impossible. We may need to wait another generation before it ends.
Do some googling. There are some great resources on the internet that will help you get a look at what's going on there.

well, the jews, catholics, protestants, and muslims in the united states share a country. the israelis and the palestinians do not share a country. however there IS a very large arab population in israel, about 20%, and while there are definitely frictions, its not as bad you seem to think. the real conflict is with the arabs outside of israel.

The conflict goes all the way back to thousands of years ago. God promised Abram to give the Land of Canaan (today’s Israel or Palestine) to his yet unborn child of promise & the child’s descendants. Because of lack of faith, Abram & Sarai tried to help God fulfill His promise. Sarai had her maid Hagar have a child with Abram – Ishamel. But God’s promise was to the son of his legal wife, Sarai (or Sarah), not to any son of a non-legal wife. So later when Abraham was 100 and Sarah 90, God caused them to finally have the child of promise through a miracle – a child in their old age, whom God Himself named Isaac (read Gen 12-17 if you want details). There has been a conflict between the descendants of Ishmael and those of Isaac since.
Today, the Muslims, or the believers of Islam (which comes from the name Ishmael), and the Israelites (descendants of Isaac and his son Jacob (whom God changes the name to Israel)) still fight because of their claim to God’s promise through Abraham. The Muslims claim that they are the rightful heir (1) because Ishmael is the first son (firstborns in Middle Eastern countries usually have double the rights of the rest of the children, including land) & (2) and because that they simply are (they don’t acknowledge that part of the OT where God promises Isaac the land, not Ishmael (Gen 17:19)). Palestine or Israel, especially Jerusalem, is the hotbed, because that’s where Solomon’s Temple is. The Muslims built their mosque there, but the Israelites claim they must have the Temple back because that’s where their Messiah is promised to come. And yes, this is where Jesus Christ will come at the Second Coming (although for Orthodox Jews, it will be the Messiah’s first Coming). The world affairs in the Middle East are all about religion. The 9/11 is directly related to this issue.

They did for hundreds of years under the Ottoman empire but along came the Zionists with their crazy philosophy in the 19th century and things have never been the same since.
The Zionists insisted on having their state run exclusively by jews.
