Please do some thorough research on dogs first. Pit bulls, though they can be very sweet-tempered dogs, are tremendously powerful and have the potential to be very dangerous in incapable hands. You should only consider a pit bull if you are a very experienced dog owner and know how to properly train and socialize a dog. Then you should find reputable breeders in your area and get only a well-bred pit bull (the breed names for pit bulls are American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, or American Staffordshire terrier). Please, though, do your research first.

Believe it or not pure blood pit bulls are available at the shelters. Even red nose. I would check there first. Then before you adopt your dog, you have to make sure you can house the dog legally at your place.
I have to warn, these dogs are extremely loving, and will steal your heart. I had one that would give me a doggy version of a hug and lay his head on my shoulder. Then he would close his eyes and nuzzle, just like kid.
Lots of energy, loads of fun. Train him, even though they do not get very tall, they are extremely STRONG.
Take great care of your dog, and become a positive advocate for the breed.
One more thing, they make terrible guard dogs, they will protect you, but not the house. Be careful of aggression signs with other animals. If you get more than one, be prepared to do the crate and switch routine. It's not always necessary, but things happen.
I saw the comment above me and I must correct her. Poodles are #4 on the most human animal bites. Pit bulls are #19 this year, so I'm worried about a poodle. Besides a poodle practically bit my sisters nose of when we were kids. Even little dogs are capable of killing. A Pomeranian killed a 6 week old infant. Go figure

Try www.petfinder.com for local rescues and shelters. There is an overpopulation problem with pitulls right now, so I'm sure you'll be able to find one there.
If you are set on a breeder go through a dog show organization like the AKC for REAL breeders. And definatly don't buy from a newpaper ad!

Great choice on a dog. Just make sure if you go to adopt from a shelter see and learn the dogs dispositions. As they get older they develop. I have a 5 month old Staff. American pittbull. He is amazing. I have had him sense he was 7 weeks old. The main thing is to socialize them and make them known what is acceptable and what is not. Mine still hasn't learned that moms stuff is hers not his and to stop getting dirty laundry out of the hampers. He is great with kids but i have had him in very awkward situations with 6 kids just petting him and he just lays there and enjoys every min of it. Mainly because i am expecting and i dint want any doubt in my mine he could hurt someone. Just watch the temper of the dog and make sure its right for you.

Red nose pits are beautiful but before you get one be prepared for how to handle one. They are an aggressive breed of dog that can easily go off and bite sometimes completely unprovoked. Are you prepared for the guilt, if it mauls a child, particularly your child if you have one? Are you financially able to weather the law suit that is sure to result. Any dog can bite and cause these issues but with a poodle its a 36 percent chance, with a pit, its a 85 percent chance. DO the math!

A breed rescue group is the best bet.
Do you know how to train a dog so a known aggressive breed like this can be under control at all times?
