You can consider yourself anything you lke. JEWS WON"T consider you Jewish unless you have a proper conversion. thats just the way it goes. See one of the requirements si that you have to go to a mikveh and immerese in front of two kosher witnesses, and then be declared a Jew by a Beis Din (rabbinical court) with a minimum of three judges. Until you do that- you have NOT met the requirements for conversion and are not Jewish.

I can learn French, eat lots of cheese, say bad things about the U.S., even buy a beret, but I'm not a French citizen until France declares that I am -- by whatever their rules and standards may be.

And I don't get to decide what those standards are. If I need to know the standards, I call the French consulate and ask. I would probably even get a French immigration lawyer who really knows the rules in detail and can help me through the process. Even illegal immigrants who don't intend to leave the country don't think they are citizens, and they know that if they want to be citizens they will need to find a way to make it official.

What's offensive about saying you need to do the paperwork and follow the technical membership rules and formalities established by the nation you want to join? Why would you want to join a nation by flouting its laws?

Sorry, you cannot become a Jew by decree. In order to be adopted into the Jewish family, you must have demonstrated to the Beit Din that you are serious and that you understand your future obligations to God.

You are certainly welcome to join us in our services, etc. and to learn from our rabbis. You have all the advantages without the major obligations required of Jews.

If you truly understand all those things and are indeed serious, you won't have any trouble at all in becoming a Jew.

All the first believers of Christ were Jews.
