they are part of our ancestors legacies...they ate more trees and roots than we did and the dirt used to get into the appendix and stay there...we don't eat dirt...as much and now we don't need it.

Evolution.
We did need them before, to digest some leaves, but as we evolved and our diet improved, the function of the appendix was just kicked out of our body... sorta like poor Pluto.
Some people argue that it does have some function (like help the immune system), but others that have been found to be born without it had a life like any normal person with an appendix.

Because the process of evolution tends to keep, but reduce the energy requirements of body parts rather than completely eliminating them. Others that can be pointed to are extra bones that make up the wrist and hand in us and other mammals which are still in the foot of a horse - the hoof being equivalent to a toe/finger nail, the fragments of bones in seagoing mammals that represent the legs, the nipple on male mammals, and bright colors on fish that live in the dark of the ocean. Only if they represent a severe failure rate to things vanish due to evolution.

Who said we didn't need them?
They are a major filter system in our bodies. If they had not been there to catch the bacteria (probley parisites as well) that cause appendicitis they would wind up in your liver, gallblader, lungs or just anywhere they felt like getting. Think how sick you would be then!
Can we survive without one, yes...still need it. They can remove one lung and the half of the other and you will live. Still need it though.

Well actually , appendix is a vestigeal organ which has no specific function but it may have effect on our immumity coz it contains lymphatic tissues especially in children but in adults its redundant organ but that doesn't mean we must get rid of it unless there is a problem .
