Call the state offices where you live they may have a free program for people just like this.

The first lesson in alcohol treatment is that you can't teach someone that doesn't want to learn.

Treatment is next to worthless when it is court ordered. Until he wants to get better, he won't.

The best you can do right now is give him incentive to want to get better. There are programs free of charge, Alcoholics Anonymous is the most well known. Try to get him to go to a meeting. Go with him to show support. If he doesn't want to go, go without him. You will learn helpful information to give him incentive to join you next time.

This will take a serious committment, rehab lasts a lifetime.

How does he afford the booze? Alcoholism is expensive too.

EDIT: yes I know its a serious problem, but as you said only the friend can help himself. PLUS, this guy is wanting to know about "free" programs - looking for a handout, and while it may be for a good cause, I was just making the point that his friend obviously has the money for a rehab program, but he has to stop buying the booze.

I would contact a state agency where you live, THey ought to lead you in the right direction, However he has to be very willing to do so, No. I do not beleive that he has to be arrested.

Yes rehab is costly, probably for a 30 day treatment liek 3,000 bucks or higher.

but contact the state and human welfare services.

Odd that he can afford the liquor but nothing for help..No, he doesn't need to be arrested and sent for help by a court.. If he's willing to get help, he can find AA meetings anywhere. They are free and they do work.. Courts mandate people with DUIs to attend AA meetings. So there is free help. But remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.. Ah, no pun intended.. Maybe I should put it another way.. You can lead this man to meetings but you can't make him stop drinking.. That's his job.. Good luck to you and your friend

you can't,he has to want to correct his problem. there are people out there to help, look in your local directory,he can walk into an AA meeting free of charge. you can only support him in his struggle to better himself.

adde. sway, you are mocking a serious problem, without being helpful.

Refer your friend to the Department of Social Welfare so that rehabilitation will be conducted.
