I have a Ruger 10/22. Just to give you an idea on what cool things you can buy for it.
I have a Guide Gear Tactical 24/7 Sighting System (Laser Sight & Light), on my BSA scope. Easy to install and sight in. I paid less then $35 for it when it was on sale at http://www.sportsmanguide.com
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=148191
I have 4 Eagle 30 round magizines, paid $12 for each at a local hardware store. They have a hard time keeping these things in stock. You can get them cheaper at sportsmansguide.com for $9.97 or club prize for a dollar cheaper. Or if you want, you can go with the 3 pack for $24.97 ($22.47 club prize)

Also have 2 Butler Creek 25 round magizines, I got from a friend. You can gert them at:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
for $19.97 ($17.97 club prize) Though I think thats a little pricey.

Well, if it is for home protection, you are way under gunned. A .22 rimfire is no defense gun. It can kill but it doesn't have much stopping power. You could fatally shoot someone with it but they might not die before doing some real harm to you or even killing you. What you need is a shotgun. I don't recommend handguns or rifles for the average person because of the over penetration propblems. A bullet can go though a wall and injur or kill someone in the next room or across the street. A shotgun loaded with #5 or #6 shot will stop most anyone in their tracks but it is not as likely to penetrate a wall with enouth power to kill someone in the next room.
As for "some cool things" for your 10/22, go to Cabella's web site at www.cabelas.com. Or you could try Gander Mountain, or Brownell's or Bass Pro. They all sell "cool stuff" for the 10/22.
As for how many yards will you shoot accurately, that's hard to say. The gun is probably good out to about 50 yards depending on how you define "accurate". Just how far YOU can shoot accurately, I have no idea.

While a .22 rifle might really do a number on a perpetrator, the problem with .22 is ammo reliability. Fresh factory centerfire has a success rate @99.9% of the time when the pin hits the primer. Even brand new .22 by a major manufacturer is capable of producing at least one bad round per box on average. And .22 primers get contaminated easily because .22 rimfire is not sealed very well at the point where casemouth meets slug. But a .22 rifle is far more advantageous than a .22 pistol. I would avoid stingers. Remington yellowjackets or CCI minimags would be better.

While the Ruger 10-22 is a fun gun to play with, I would not rely on it for protection. I have owned about four 10-22 rifles over the years. Never did have one that had a reliable magazine. That ten round rotary mag. always was a problem and I usually had to buy a couple extra mags before finding a reliable one.
I do like the rifle, it is a pretty accurate auto loader out to about 100 yards with the right ammo. I have one set up with a bull barrel, a thumb hole, laminated stock, and 3 x 9 variable power scope. At 50 yards I can pretty much put the bullets thru the same hole. At 100 yards, it will hold a one inch group.
The other one I have is for my Grandson. It has a standard barrel, black folding stock, a 90 round magazine (too heavy), and a red dot scope. At 50 yards it will shoot about a two inch group and about twice that at a 100 yards. I suspect it would do better with a conventional scope.

As long as it's not the carbine model there are a lot of accessories. Cabala's even has a kit you can turn two 10-22's into a Gatling gun. For home protection anyone including cops/lawyers will tell you it's a bad idea. I will and have carry a mouse gun in 22lr but it's a last ditch the guy is on me I can't get my primary pistol or it's jammed and I'm close enough to shove this mousy in his gut and shoot. I may still get hurt or he'll kill me but there is a possibility he will run or I can run. Use the 10-22 for hunting and targets get a bigger caliber for your primary home protection keep the 10-22 for back-up. Yeah the guy might get scared and run but if he doesn't are you willing to risk your or your families life on a .22lr round. I'll take 3 .38spl, 9mm, .357mag, .45acp over a 30rnd clip of .22lr any day. Hell give me one of the bigger calibers and I'll still rely on that over the 22. Now for accuracy, practice is how you shoot accurate there isn't a gun on the market or a bullet that makes marksman out of anyone.

The 10/22 is chambered for .22LR and .22 magnum. The caliber is specified on the reciever. The reason why it would not eject is because the amount of energy a .22 long gives out is not sufficient enough to move the action. The same thing happens when you use .22 shorts in a semi-auto .22 rifle.

Okay, here's what you can use: For shooting 100 yards you will need 40 grain ammunition, not the cheap 36 and37 grain hollowpoints, the 40 grain roundnose. I like Winchester Super X, myself. Stingers are not recommended by most manufacturers, and they tend to be a little hot for real accuracy.

You can shoot as accuratelyshoot as well as the sharpness of your vision using the existing sights [about 150 yards]. You can buy folding stocks, muzzlebrakes, laser sights, etc., but all this junk is unnecessary for home defense purposes.

I use the CCI Quik Shok myself. If their more than 21ft away you have legal problems, rabbits at 50 yards is no problem.
