A New Home in the Sun, Man ?
Aahh, SunMan, such questions, how to answer ?
Some have asked what are 'spiritual gifts' ?, some have said that some call them a 'curse', some believe that others have them, some believe that such things are imaginary, the result of some wistful, wishful, Utopian kind of fantasy thinking, several believe that they are endowed with such things and have used them to 'good' effect.
Here is another perspective.
We are all participles of that thing which many have called God.
We all have exactly the same amount of 'creative power'.
We are all engaged in creating the experiences that we desire, not always at the conscious level, but at one level or another, sometimes more than one 'level' acts in combination with one or more other level(s).
Thus, following this line of determination, any event that occurs has been 'Intentionally' engendered by the participant(s) to produce a certain experience.
Now here comes the nub of the matter.
If entity A. is in such a 'life and death' seeming situation, does entity B., having some understanding that there are 'other levels' at which one can use energy to produce 'results', enter the scenario of entity A. and assume 'control' and resolve the matter in what would seem to be a generally 'satisfactory' manner ?
The answer is : "It all depends".
OK, it all depends on what ?
It all depends on what was/is/will be the 'real' overall intention(s) of the entity(s) who generated the event.
It is perfectly true that many events are generated specifically so that apparently 'miraculous' powers intervene to 'save the day'. This is called by many 'Signs and Wonders', and is a phenomenom designed to raise people's awareness of what is possible.
In the end, as with all human experience, we have to make our decisions carefully and from as 'wise' a position as we can muster, and what do you know ?
Sometimes we seem to get it 'right', and many times we seem to fall flat on our faces.
Remember the old Scottish saying :
"God will curse you for all the good deeds you do !"
In other words, intervene at your peril. But never hold back if you believe in your heart that to 'help' is the 'right course'.

The question is very important from the point of view of Spirituality.First of all we define the difference between Spirituality & Religion.Spirituality is a dedication of mind, will, and feelings of an individual to the inquiry of the Absolute reality. This should be distinguished from religion which dictates the practice of certain rules prescribed as we observe in our religions. In otherwords,we can say that Spirituality is an individual concern where as religion is social contract. It is commonly believed that spirituality is an answer to all societal afflictions. The Hinduism(Sanatan Dharma) regards Brahman as the underlying principle of our existence. If the universe is the outcome of cause and effect relationship, then there has to be some ultimate entity which is the causeless cause of its existence. This causeless cause of the universe has been described by the sages as Brahman,Supreme or Absolute reality.Spirituality has been considered a panacea most of ills . It is generally believed that one can not achieve Moksha(Liberation) only after death .Liberation(Moksha) means going from one place(house of sorrows)to another one place(peace). These conceptions about Moksha is not true. One could achieve Liberation(Moksha)in this life itself, and it is not necessary to go anywhere to achieve it.Moreover, it is not necessary to wait for death to achieve Liberation(Moksha). I have make an effort to define how Spirituality can be used in life & death although it is available in the books of Hindu(Sanatan Dharma) religion.

Hey <<>>, while I am not quite sure exactly what you're looking for in this question, I would like to give the answer that came to me when I read the question...
To me, when in a life-and-death situation, the concern of "using spiritual gifts" should be moot. If one has to think, "what are my spiritual gifts, and how can I use them in this situation?" then that person is over thinking. We ARE the spiritual gifts!
When we act in the moment, we ARE using our spiritual gifts to their fullest, and that is all that ANY situation requires.
=)

Hi Sun Man,
I think that life & death situations are the most appropriate times to use spiritual gifts.
In the Buddha's time, leading disciples would be attended to by monks, when seriously ill, for example.
The results of the words exchanged could sometimes be the difference between life & death; or a favourable rebirth & one less so.
In such situations, one's spiritual faculties are most acute, or can be. One's faith / conviction / confidence heightened.
It's at such times that one needs one's friends most. :-)
There's power in words of truth.
'Enlightenment' is available until the very last second - and beyond, I hear... :-)

I do not know what a spiritual "gift" might be? Who would give such a gift? What would characterize it as spiritual?
I'm just going to assume I know what you mean and answer. If we answer according to the ancient traditions, then it depends. If they act before the deed is done, generally yes. But if an enlightened being drinks poison, they will die. Ask Socrates. Someone like the mythical Jesus of the Bible could have prevented his death before being nailed up, but after it was too late.

There is a time for everything.
What I have done today, has a great possibility to open and close doors in my life that could be in store for me tomorrow, next week, or years from now. Whether it be some of cheerful fortune or a fortune of tribulation.
Is the reason I do my best everyday when I wake up to be optimistic and ready for action at any given moment.

I have used spiritual gifts to connect with my mother's fear of death. She was beyond my voice or external awareness. Her facial features were a horrible mask of fear and pain yet she would not release it and move toward redemption. I arrived to find her in this condition. Having experienced the peace and joy that death can bring when the way is clearly defined, I took my mother's hand and joined our minds so that I could gently persuade her to a safe passage. Though I had hated her for more than 40 years, in life, we bonded then and she was able to go in peace. She was radiant and beautiful in death. We are both at peace.

I've had experiences where, in a life-and-death situation, my higher self takes over, the time extends and I literally *fly* to push someone out of the way of a car, etc. This has happened several times, so I know this to be a rule, rather than an exception.
Although I'm not sure that's what you were after.

My understanding of spiritual gifts is that they aren't 'super powers', like shooting a web from your wrist. They are qualities that come naturally to you - Things that help you serve.
Such as: The gift of leadership, the gift of encouragement, the gift of evangelism.
I guess they all help in a spiritual life and death situation :)

I use Reiki in all situations requiring realignment. However, in situations where there is the possibility that an individual can die, the Reiki is given with the intent to serve what is for the highest and best for the person who will be receiving it. It is not up to me, as a vehicle for delivering vital life force to another, to determine how that energy should be used. That is strictly up to the person on the receiving end, to their Higher Self. Most will use the energy to ease their crossing as they move through their Bardo. Others will be able to use it to heal. It is a choice, but not mine.
