Eric C put away the sherlock holmes hat I have nothing to hide. I asked the question due to the fact I have heard alot of corrupt stories with police and on tv with alot of abuse of their power. So sorry to ruin the lilly white image you have of the brother hood but there are some bad apples for sure and the brotherhood protects them. So I am not a criminal but I do read.

I have had both positive and negative experiences.
The most positive ones are the oldest and the negative ones the more recent. I dont know if there is anything to the trend.
Even the negative ones have not effected my opinion of police officers. I have great respect for what they do.
They are human, have bad days too, and are subject to error, just like anyone else.
I do wish they would review the following distance laws.

I called 911 when I saw a man looking in through my window at me. I was living in a bad neighborhood and I'd been out of town for a few days; he was probably thinking about robbing me.

The police showed up quick and looked around. The officer made sure the guy was gone; he must've run, when he realized I saw him. The cop also recommended leaning on my apt. management to get better lighting in the area, particularly near my front door. He was professional and helpful. I did sleep with a knife under my pillow that night, though.

Yes I have. One nite late, I was driving from the Trump Marina, to the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, NJ. No traffic as it was pretty late at nite. I made a right at a light onto a street that I did not know was a 1 way.. Suddenly a Poliice Cruiser blocked my way and I of course stopped.. He told me I was going the wrong way on a 1 way street. I appologized and said I was new at driving the city and must have missed seeing the sign.. He told me to just make a left by his car and I would be fine.. No ticket and very curtious.. :-) For the most part I believe most police are very trustworthy, but like with any other job, there are a few rotten apples in every barrel.

Your question comes off rather accusatory, like cops are untrustworthy people in any scenario. Why would you need to trust the police?

If you're a criminal (yes that includes you actively committing any kind of crime) then you definitely should not trust the police. Their job is too uncover the crimes and enforce the law.

If you're not committing crimes what would you have to trust them with?

Yes, I know many of them personally and I would trust them in any circumstance. Most people have a bad feeling towards them because they don't have a chance to meet them unless they are getting a ticket which isn't a pleasant experience. The press likes to blow things out of proportion when they get a story because scandal sells newspapers, the police are doing a great service for the community and most people don't hear about that on the daily news.

The best I've gotten out of them is a little leniency when I could have had a much heftier speeding fine... don't have much use for them, myself. If we can't be grown-ups & we still need the schoolyard guard to protect us, then this country is really getting soft! Any thinking person knows how to stay away from bad situations.

I have never had a bad experience with cops. Until I do I will always trust the police.

Well as a person who deals with them everyday my answer would be yes you can trust them. There are some who are corrupt but there are alot of fair and just officers out there trying to keep us safe.
