Having been born, raised & educated in the USA - then having spent the last 9 years living in England - my comments would be:-
Best things about England and the English
-A playful sense of language. I am amazed at the puns, slang and pronunciations - I hear something new almost every day that astounds me at how inventive the English are with words! Like when my mother-in-law finished a big meal and said 'look at me, I've got a swollen belly like a poisoned pup'.
-Erudite news organisations unafraid to discuss issues and present indepth reporting as demonstrated by Channel 4 News and the Independent newspaper in particular.
-An unashamed love of entertaining oneself the old-fashioned way by gardening, taking care of animals, drinking cups of tea, playing board games, going down the pub, visiting National Trust properties, listening to the radio, doing the crossword and all those other things Americans have abandoned in favour of video games, iphones and the internet which insulate them from the Real World.
-A feeling of safety and contentment. Crime in England in general is far less prevalent. People are not so aggressive or confrontational and it's comforting to know very few people wield guns (not even the police, most of the time).
-The simple ability to get on with my life and do things like walk to work, recycle, buy organic food from small local shops and have a committment ceremony with my boyfriend without being made to feel like a freak.
Worst things about England and the English
-The aristocracy. What an anachronism in this day and age. Just like President Bush, they weren't elected by the majority. Off with their heads! :)
-Their refusal to accept that they have more in common with Europeans than Americans and that the European Union is a good thing.
-The worrying trend to hive off social services like education, transport and the NHS to the private sector which means government is no longer responsible for what matters most to people and instead shareholders are getting rich off essential services.
-Talking non-stop about the weather...when the country rarely has any weather worth talking about!
Worst things about USA and the Americans
-Trash TV. Entertaining up to a point, but all the 'action news' and 'celebrity cosmetic surgery gone wrong' and 'send us ten dollars so the Lord Jesus will answer your prayers' gets tiresome after awhile.
-The all-pervasive influence which religion and the military wield over society that encourages homophobia, xenophobia and jingoism. And how hypocritical Republican politicians cynically latch onto 'family values' and 'patriotism' while taxing the common man into the ground.
-How big business touts that it has made America the richest country in the world, where anybody can be or buy anything they want, though people are forced to take 2 or 3 jobs to scrape by and have to do without things the English can take for granted like 6 weeks paid vacation, free healthcare and a pension.
Best things about USA and the Americans
-Wide open spaces and the freedom of the open road. A car is such a joy to drive there and it's far cheaper than the UK (where I've gone without a car - but don't need one anyway).
-A higher level of customer service. People in shops are more helpful, friendlier and come across as more genuine. Though the spiel a waiter can give you at a restaurant becomes annoying.
-The weather (I do miss the Kansas sunshine - but not the humidity, tornadoes or mosquitoes).
-People being more conscientious. The English can be so slovenly, throwing litter onto the ground, smoking where they are not supposed to, playing loud music and drinking to excess. The Americans do just the same, but in my experience other people are more likely to speak up when someone is being anti-social.
I suppose what sums up my opinion is that America promotes itself but is really nothing like what it touts to be (just, free, democratic, with opportunities for all).
In the meantime the English regret too much about what they used to be (an industrial power, an empire, a jolly good bunch of old chaps) - when in fact what they have left behind in the end could help make them the better nation.
England is now doing fine without child labour, a rigid class system, overseas colonies and foreign military bases. Instead, it's America's turn to depend on those things now and look where those policies have led them!

TC...saying "2. Each day, some americans die" is awful. If you dont like the country (and I doubt you have even been here) that's one thing, but to revel in the death of others is horrible. You are a disgrace.
Carrie...you made me laugh with all your stereotypes..not even sure where they come from, but they were funny none the less...
we dont all have big hair, wo do have real cheese, and the obesity rate in England is 1 in 5...nearly trebled in the last 20 years (8 million obese, to the 60 million population) .13% to our .2% (60 million obese to the more than 300 million population.)...only .07% difference..
but our leader is stupid..lol ;)
as for the actual questions....
England Good:
1. the history
2. the beautiful countryside
3. the architecture
4. the wonderful people
5. the good food
England Bad:
1. the weather is slightly unpredictable (although I do like the rain)
2. I actually can't think of anything else lol
America Good:
1. the food
2. so many different types of land...I can go to the mountains, the ocean, the desert...all in one day
3. there is always something to do or somewhere to go
4. I'm here!
5. yeah, that's all I got lol
America Bad:
1. the poverty
2. the hipocracy
3. the leader
4. the overindulgence
5. the traffic!

England or the U.K. as a whole?
Things I like about England it's on the other side of the Irish Sea from me.
You can drink in a pub when you are 18 years old.
You can walk anywhere you want without people thinking you are mad cause you don't take the car.
You can get directions from people with out to much trouble.
The Americans have George W Bush for a leader and that is all the five reasons all in one.

Five each? Or five total?
This sounds to me like disguised help with a homework assignment.
Do your own work.
Add: I received this email from the questioner:
"Message: No, it's a straightforward Question!
Try not to complicate matters!! "
Sweetpea, if you're going to take the time to email someone why not just answer the QUESTION? The QUESTION is five each or five total? Asking for clarification is the EXACT OPPOSITE of complicating something!
Avoiding clarification. More evidence that it's a homework assignment.
The reason that clarification is appropriate is that you're basically saying, "Tell me what you like about apples and oranges." Lumping the two together is ... strange.

Things I like (no particular order): the language (English), the food (honest, not overly spiced, good ingredients), the kindness of MOST ppl, clean restrooms, good quality medical care
Things I don't like: the fact that some ppl move to the US or the UK and never learn any English (I am not talking about heavy accents, I mean they do not speak any English, not even broken English); political correctness to the point that ppl cannot even have a discussion of any kind; rudeness that seems to be on the rise; lack of new ideas when it comes to tv and the movies;Mondays (true of most any country)
