A little won't mess you up, but a lot will. It's that nasty dehydration thing going on, and the fact that your body can only process so much alcohol.

The best way to help avoid the problems (besides not drinking at all) is to drink plenty of water while you're drinking something alcoholic. Like, have a beer, then switch to water. Have a second beer, then have another water.

It'll make you pee a lot, so drink more water. Peeing adds to the nasty dehydration.

It's actually not the alcohol at all.....as you drink alcohol, your body uses up water to break it down in the liver to remove it from your blood stream. It takes more water by volume to break down the alcohol, which is why you get dehdrated from it. It breaks down into several components a few of which are formaldehyde (yes the stuff that preserves dead animals for you to disect in science class) and something called a ketone. It's actually the ketones that mess you up. As the body breaks down the alcohol and becomes dehydrated, there is not enough water to continue breaking down the ketones and remove them from the bloodstream. As the ketones become "overloaded" in your bloodstream, it affects your nervous system. Coordination, speech, etc. possibly to the point of death depending on how big of a lush you are.
Enjoy! It's also why you get a hangover....drink lots of water the day you decide to party and WHILE you party....you'll be amazed!

Alcohol doesn't mess you up. You're already messed up, alcohol just makes your private problems more public.
Examine your life. You're intelligent enough to ask the questions, so you're intelligent enough to find the answers.
