Chaining and caging are bad, bad ideas. Crating for short periods of time would be okay, like overnight, when the dog is sleeping. Chaining is particularly dangerous, because dogs tend to get tangled up around trees or other objects, and they can't reach their food and water dishes. They can also get choked pretty easily if they climb up onto something and jump off the other side.

If you don't have a fenced yard, you really shouldn't have a large dog that can't be kept inside all the time.

Chaining a dog is cruel and in a certain county in California is illegal if chained for longer than 30 minutes.
Caging dogs for a short time is alright. However, for all day long is not nice!
Labradors need a LOT of exercise and a LOT of room or they get extremely bored. I never understood why people who do not have a good fenced in yard, get large dogs.

What do you mean by "compound?" Anyway, when you say "cage" do you mean a chain link kennel? If he's only going to be in there for a few hours a day,and it 's at least 8x10 feet, with shelter and shade, then it's fine.If it's to keep him safe and out of trouble, then that's fine.If you choose to chain him instead, make sure that there's no way for him to get tangled on anything, that the chain,or cable is strong enough and has swivels on both ends, and that he has ,of course, shelter from the rain, and cold, and shade from the sun. Also, try to make the chain at least 10 feet in length.Oh,and NEVER chain him with a choke collar,he can strangle!

Don't know what you mean. You should have a special area for him at all times to roam around it. I don't know how big your compound is. It is not fair to chain him or cage him up. Can't you have a good sized area fenced off that will give him plenty of room and not confine him to one small area?
How would you feel if somebody shut you up in one small room in your home and wouldn't let you out?
If animals can't be treated well; they should be given to someone who will be very good to them at all times.

Your question is very unclear.

Chained dogs become aggressive and can bite, as they know that they cannot escape if being attacked. In my area it is illegal to chain a dog. If you cannot have the dog running around the compound, get a dog run.

Please do not chain or cage your labrador. They are very social and laid back, and can be trained to use the bathroom in appropriate places and not get in the way of business. I think it is mean to confine an animal to a small space for a long period of time. Chains and cages are both cruel. Labs are awesome dogs and good friends, so if you can't have him or her lose on your property, please find a loving home. :)

You can crate him, but if you are gone for too long that is not fair to the dog. Chaining him up isn't exactly nice either. I don't understand why he can't wonder around your fenced in yard.
