It originated as a hygienic practice which became a "rule of thumb" in the United States. Although I personally disagree with it, there are many who *still* believe it's a hygienic necessity.
I have, however, known a few males born in the United States who either were not circumcised at all or not until adulthood. Supposedly it is less painful for a newborn than for an adult male; and *that* seems to be a strong enough argument for most people; but to me it is a rather weak one!
The baby boy has no more choice in the matter than the baby girl or baby boy who is murdered in the womb before getting an opportunity to be born!
The current hype and concern about misuse and abuse of prescription pain killers, which I believe is blown completely out of proportion, militates against waiting.

Good point. I find it upsetting that people do it for all sorts of reasons, and the USA is pretty much the only country that still does it for non-religious reasons! In terms of religious reasons I agree when a person becomes an adult and wants to join the church it should be there choice. There is no reason for circumcision in the modern world and if some people have genital mutilation as part of their religion that's fine, they can do it to themselves, bring up their children in the church, but not modify their children's body until the child themselves decides they want to permanently remove part of themselves and join the church.

just so you know because I am a mother, when you are born they ask if you want them circumcised. They do not tell you the benefits or religious references etc. I never knew circumcision was a religious thing until I was 34 after I became a Christian. No my friend they ask and the parent makes the call with or without any knowledge at all. now you know.

The reason it is done or was done here is because it had been considered a way to prevent cancer. So, are you mad at the United States? or at your parents? I am not sure what you are looking for here. I am sorry you have decided you didn't want it done, but I don't think it can be undone...why not check with a doctor for your options. When my children came from Korea, they were not circumcised and their pediatrician did not recommend it be done.

It's not a law or anything. Relax. It is a Jewish law. It has nothing to do with anyone else. You don't have to be. That is a decision that the parents make when the baby is born. And it is done because of hygiene reasons, unless you're a Jew.

It really isn't for health purposes. They have found the uncircumcised males are just as clean as the ones that are. It's a cultural thing. Most males are, and most people do it because it is more accepted then not doing it, but it is starting to turn the other direction now.
I would have my boys circumcised because it is a personal decision, and I think it is better then not, but that's just my opinion.

Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin of the penis. It is most often performed on newborn male babies, usually for religious reasons. It may also be carried out on adults. Circumcision is a religious ritual practiced for thousands of years by Jews and Muslims. In some countries it is also routinely carried out for reasons of hygiene ( because circumcision prevents the accumulation of secretions under the foreskin). Medical reasons for circumcision is recurrent infections or painful intercourse.

Circumcision is best done as a baby. It is your choice if you want it done or not. Not everyone chooses to have their sons circumcised for religious reasons. Some do it for health reasons. My uncircumcised 12yr old cousin developed a terrible infection in his penis. You wouldn't want to wish that on any child believe me. If he had been circumcised, he would not have gotten the infection. I have also heard that statistically, Jewish women have the lowest percentage of vaginal, cervical and uterine cancer because their husbands are circumcised.

does that still happen?, here in Australia you can ask for it on medical grounds or religious but not for other reasons .. and you'd better be ready to have a good argument .. there are a lot of 'bleeding hearts' who will stop you doing it anyway - I was schnickled but none of my offspring have been; but then mine was the norm in the 40's

Whoa,
first of all you sound like you're bitter about the middle east. at least you give that impression anyway.
Second, self mutilation? Goodness. it is done for health reasons. And there's nothing you can do about your penis now, just don't circumsize your boys if you dont want to.
