Ok so i have tried numerous ways to fix my computer (Windows XP Home) and it seems the attempts have only made things worse. It started out as a hal.dll error and now it is something with the harddrive. What happens when i turn the computer now is; it gives me th normal start screen with bios or boot menu choice then goes to the following screen:

"Copyright 1996-2002 Intel Corporation

RG84510A.15A.0021.P11.0210160839

Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 processor, 2.40 GHz

225 MB System RAM

Legacy Keyboard....Detected
USB Legacy.........Enabled

ATAPI CD-ROM HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-43

Primary Master Hard Disk Error
Press tp Run SETUP"

I would really appreciate any help at all. Again i dont have access to windows through that computer, I am using another for this question. Thanks

Yeah i really appreciate everyone's help. However, i have already tried to reinstall the OS but that was one of the things that made it worse.

It could be physical damage or at the very least it would seem the master boot record has become corrupted and unreadable. You might want to try repair install your windows operating system. Here are some instructions to do that ....

Sounds like the hard drive has failed. If the drive does not show up in the BIOS (press F4 for setup gets you into BIOS) then you will have to replace the drive.

Make sure the master/slave jumpers have not been changed on the drives, and if it does show up then you need to partition, format and re-install Windows XP.

Sounds like you've messed up the master boot record. Might want to investigate how to repair that. If you have no files on the hard drive that you will ever need, then go ahead and reload the OS.

Press F8 on the first boot screen, then hit safe mode. If it is a problem with your comp hit F8 and select CHDSK, this will check your drives for problem and repair it, you will have to wait though.
