When we got her from the Humane Society, Maggie was about five pounds underweight and wouldn't eat anything except cooked chiken. Now she eats anything and everything and we can't get her to stick to a diet. We live on a farm and she loves to run all over our ten acres as often as she likes throughout the day, so she isn't lacking in excersise. We suspect that she's getting into the compost outside and that thats where she gets extra food. But what goes out to the garden is mostly leftover fruits and veggies, things that Maggie won't eat when we offer them to her in the kitchen. She only gets a cup of food a day and usually doesn't eat it all. How do I get her to stop eating whatever it is that she's getting outside and get her down to a healthy weight?

Play detective and find out for sure what she is eating every day. Maybe others are giving her treats or table scraps. Maybe she is getting into another animals food. You don't really know.
However, 1 cup of kibble a day is WAY too much for a dog that weighs 15 lbs and should be less. That's how much I feed my 30 lb dog. So, cut the food in 1/2, figure out what else she is eating and stop it, and be sure she gets lots of exercise.

Take her outside on a leash that way you can monitor what she eats. Feed her less, a cup a day is a lot for a dog her size, cut out all treats and take her for walks at least twice a day.
Instead of giving her free run of the property maybe you should consider making a run for her so that she can not get into anything and this way she will still have the freedom to run.

I suggest that you take her into the Vet just to make sure there isn't some other problem ( like her Thyroid) that could be contributing to her putting on weight. The Vet has special food for weight loss and can help you find out what's best for your dog. I hope everything works out fine and good luck in getting your dog down to a more healthy weight for her size.

Put a fence around the compost pile. Not only will it make her fat eating the scraps from it,it could potentially make her very ill or even kill her to be eating compost,as there are bacteria and molds in there that can be harmful. You could also try sprinkling cayenne pepper and black pepper over the compost to make it taste bad to her.

Talk to your vet before you put your dog on a diet. . . We aren't the best at telling how much a dog should weigh- my dog is also a doxie-min pin mix I think and he weighs 24lb and is nice and skinny. Block the compost for sure- but check with your vet to be sure doggie needs a diet.

u need to feed her less. if u give her less to eat she obviously wont eat as much. u should only be feeding her between 2/3 and 1 cup of food a day. so feed her less and give her more exercise

EDIT: also block her from the compost

Block the composter so she can't get to it.
