We had this great praise and worship session at church. It was upbeat and everyone was singing and clapping, and then the church went dead during the pastor's sermon. He went into sounding like he was scolding the audience. He was like 'We shouldn't be worried about what we look like. We NEED to be worried about how we're doing in the presence of God." then he went into "some of us our fat. we need to stop eating gluttonously. it's a sin' and all the stuff about 'how the women need to stop dressing scantily. Wearing high skirts is unacceptable and low cut shirts is against god." 'some of us think its ok to look at pornogrophy. Enough with adulterers and homosexuals." There wasn't one clap during his sermon and the church went dead. Why do some pastors have to ruin the mood with that garbage.

If the church is more than just you and the pastor, then it's possible others didn't come away thinking that the "mood" was ruined. It's possible, other people came away touched, and moved by the message.

Just because you don't like something, is no reason for you to assume EVERYONE doesn't like something.

As a pastor, I feel that people get enough bad news six days a week, the last thing they need is more bad news from me.

A sermon should help you grow closer to God. That's the point of it. Everything else is just talking.

Of course, you need to prayerfully consider what bothered you -- the message or the method. Was he talking too close to your own sins, and so you were offended? Is that possibly why you thought it was "garbage?"

Even if he was preaching too close to home, a good sermon would have reminded you that Christ died for the forgiveness of those sins.

Godspeed.

I left a church where the Pastor pointed fingers at people all the time, and had no love and mercy for anyone- however I will say- that church is not to make you feel good- it is to gather together to praise and worship and also at times a Pastor needs to exhort as well. It depends on the way he approached it, however. When people repent of sin, there clapping in heaven, which is far more important then people clapping in church-over lively music. Praising God should lead to repentance when needed.

Well, as a pastor and preacher, I can tell you the job isn't to create a festive mood or conduct a party. For Christian pastors, the job is to coach, guide, teach, and instruct.

I might not agree with all he said, but the Bible is pretty clear about gluttony and adultery. Dress is a different matter and most pastors won't enfore the requirement in Ephesians that women have their heads covered... the rules have adapted to the culture.

Sorry the mood was ruined. A big part of preaching is staying out of God's way so that the message can come through, even when your preaching isn't very good. Hope you give him another chance or find a better place where you can grow in faith! Grace & peace!

If you think he was lying, why don't you tell God? And if you notice that God doesn't kick him out on the street, maybe you need to reconsider who is wrong.

There is something wrong with the way people dress today. The "only" person that will ever have the "right" to see your body at "anytime" is your spouse--not your boy friend or girl friend! At any time that you "feel" I'm wrong, you just go and pick up that Bible (AV1611) and quote were it reads the issue is base on "I think," "I feel," or "that's not fair"?

I work at Home Depot and many of the people who come in there dress like they just came from a whore house. I wish I could tell them to leave the store until they get some clothes on.

Sound to me like he was preaching the right message.

Go to a different church then.

After all Christianity is an a la carte religion. just pick and chose which bits of the bible and doctrine you want to believe, then find a church that will back up your preconceptions that your selection is actually the one that Jesus really wanted.

It is pathetic. Don't you think that a omnipotent deity could have done a better job at making his requirements for our behavior a bit clearer?

Why not carve them into the rock in letters 3 ft high, going a mile deep. Then there would be no argument over them. Instead he arranges for them to be written down way after the events, edited, mis-translated, and mis-copied all several times.

Congratulations. You have created a god in the image that you want him to be.

If you go to church just to feel good maybe you should just get a group together to sing and feel good. Church is about respect for God and doing his will. These things the pastor talked about are in the Bible which set the morral standards for us. Jesus said he is no part of this world, are you going to let the world set your standards of dress, entertainment and associations? You need to consider why you are going to church, Is it the relationship you have with God or is it the relationship you have with the friends in the church?

Well ive seen sermons like this when they have failed to study their lesson and prepare 4 their sermon...Yes, the sermon is suppossed to be from God and perhaps that was what God gave him 4 today. However, his delivery was not successful. Message delivery is just as important as message content. If u cant successfully deliver the word, your audience will drift. It doesnt take screaming & hollering either, it takes a subject and information related to the subject with visual examples from the Bible. Alot of "em" get off the subject or jump from subject to subject to subject which looses people also.

Church is about worship and praise. It is also about teaching and learning. You need to pick a church that fulfills you in all areas. It sounds as though his intentions were good, but maybe his delivery needed work.

I know of a church that something similar happened. Everyone was rejoicing, and the mood was high. Visitors to the church were there to watch a loved one be baptized. As soon as the baptism was over, and the little girl left the baptismal pool, the pastor reached over to adjust his microphone, and was electrocuted in front of all of his parishioners. He was killed. Talk about killing the mood of worship...

Anyway, I only mention this because we need to remember that how we live today will dictate our life tomorrow.

I don't know. I would have to be there. But, I do know one thing. If you talk about praise and feeling good then everyone normally has a good time. But, if you call people on their sins then they will eventually run you out of town with pitch forks. You may need to listen to the sermon. Sometimes, we need to listen to what we don't want to hear.

Why did Jesus have to ruin the nice marketplace and moneychanging activity the Pharasees had going in the temple, too. He goes in, knocks over tables, says "My Father's house should be a place of worship". What a downer, man.

Sometimes pastors feel called to deliver an unpopular message. Why not ask him. I'm sure he'd welcome the feedback.
