The American public is afraid to elect an atheist president because of all of the misconceptions surrounding their non-belief. Did you know that Americans would vote for a president who is Muslim, Gay, Black, or Female before they've vote for an Atheist? Sad, isn't it?

An Atheist would be a very fair and impartial president, unlike our current president who listens to god before his constituents.

The main parties won't put forward an atheist candidate, as a large proportion of religious voters would reject the candidate on that basis alone.

Not all Atheist are smart and reading through this forum has plenty of examples of that. Just like all Religious people aren't smart.

Idiocy is not relegated to one group of people.

: Thomas Jefferson was a Deist (/Christian Deist), later in his life he openly shared some of the views preached in Unitarianism.

Thomas Jefferson was never an Atheist and there is nothing to suggest he ever denied the existence of a God. In fact, he always claimed the existence of a God in his public and private writings up until his death.

Deism *does not equal* "fairly atheistic." A deist believes in a God, they tend to believe that their God does not interfere with human life and the laws of the universe.

It seems to me that many of the earlier presidents were fairly atheistic; Thomas Jefferson springs to mind. The time in which he lived precluded him coming out as an atheist

LOL - nice one. And yes we should.

When will we get an atheist president? After we get a black man and a woman as presidents. In other words, not anytime soon, sadly.

Not every person identifies themselves so it's hard to tell, and I think it would be wrong to want to know someone's beliefs before you decide that they are worth listening to or not (which would be a form of prejudice) I think it would be difficult to run for president as an athiest as they are in the minority and it's hard to be any kind of minority in the US, as people tend to be rather close minded in the USA.

we listen to people who are interesting to listen to, as humans we tend to give approval to what we hear because of the way it is said, we really don't care if the speaker is smart or not
