I'm a california resident and I bought a used car in North Carolina. I am planning on flying to North Carolina to drive the car across country. Because the car doesn't have a license plate, I went down to the CA DMV to register the car, but they only gave me a temporary permit (red square piece of paper that I'm supposed to stick on the rear of my windshield).
With this piece of paper, am I okay to drive without a license plate on the back of the car from the East coast to the West Coast?
I've already taken out an insurance policy on the car, if that helps your answers.

Hey Quarterdime, thanks! I'm so relieved! It's a 98 Toyota Camry... I tell ya, those things run forever!
Would it be worth it to write the temporary license plate number in big font and place it in the rear view?

P.S. I am avoiding Kansas! I'm picking up a friend in NY and we're driving through the northern route.
