I would be scared he has backup, so I would want to keep my gun loaded and armed and in my grip, but wouldnt the police NOT want that? What is the proper thing to do after notifying the police after having shot someone. If it makes any difference, Id likely be defending myself with a pump action 12 gauge, nothing semi automatic.

@ sugar: youve never heard of a castle doctrine law? we have the right in our own property to not flee versus violence to protect ourselves. i would not shoot if the intruder put his hands up and got on the ground for me, but if he has a weapon i will pull the trigger first, ask questions later.

First and foremost, ensure the threat is stopped. Shoot twice if you have to. Next, when you call 911, say nothing other than there's been a shooting. Do NOT say you did the shooting as this will be recorded. When the police arrive, say nothing other than you want a lawyer. You are NOT required to make any statements. Legally, this is the safe route. Sure it will make me mad when you don;t talk to me but I will understand. When I arrive, make sure you are NOT holding a gun. Neutralize the threat and leave the residence.

i would do as they say. they will probably arrest you until they figure everything out. and sadly in the USA you might even get some jail time if you cant prove he was going to cause you serious bodily harm or death.

there has been cases like that. such as someone setting a trap with a shotgun because he was tired of his house being broken into and 1 day the burglar set off that trap and got shot right in the gut and died. the family of the burglar sued the guy who set the trap INSIDE HIS OWN HOUSE and the family of the burglar won the case. true story

Make sure that the mother effer that broke into your house is no longer breathing. Then call 911. Listen to the directions that the dispatcher gives you. He / She will have you come out of your house with your hands in the air (once the police are there).

DO THIS OR YOUR AS S WILL BE SHOT!!.

Listen to the cops and once they start asking you about the shooting, ask them for a lawyer. Don't hide anything from them, but exercise your right to representation. If this P.O.S. was breaking into your house and you felt that your life was in danger when you killed him / her, you are ok, but have a lawyer on your side that knows all of the rules of criminal procedure.

first, it doesn't really matter what kind of gun you have, just make sure you are not holding it when the cops get there. What happens after that just depends on where you live. In many rural areas if it is apparent that it was a justified, then you may only be taken to the station for a statement and then released.

When the police show up, follow every order they give to the letter.

Unless you are known to the responding officers, you will most certainly will be handcuffed, which can be rough when guns and shootings are involved.

Tell them you are the homeowner. Give your identifying info (name, birth date, SS#, etc)

Say "I want to speak to an attorney." SAY NOTHING ELSE UNTIL AN ATTORNEY HAS TOLD YOU TO DO SO.

I do not care how innocent you KNOW you are, say no more. It will all work out in the courts.

Yes check and make sure there's no one with him as back up. Then secure your home and put the gun down so that when the police arrive you won't be mistaken as a threat. Oh yeah if you have any illegal paraphernalia you should put it away..... Then go outside and wait for the police to arrive.

once the police arrive for your safety put the gun down and cooperate with them fully so you don't get shot. Besides that try to keep what you say at that point to a minimum to avoid saying anything that'll have you ending up in prison...

first you have no right to shoot someone to protect your things...only if you felt your life was threatened can you shoot someone in self defense. on the phone i would tell the police you have the suspect at gun point for your safety...so they know when they get there, its not a nice surprise to have someone with a loaded shotgun. they will tell you to put the gun down and will have their guns out for their own safety until they clear up everything to ensure you arnt the suspect who turned around and got the weapon.

On the phone to 911, describe your appearance as the householder, tell them that you're armed. When PD gets there, do EXACTLY what you're told, carefully.
You might end up temporally ''cuffed and stuffed'', but it's for the peace of mind of the cops.

Here in FL they have changed the law, if you feel threatened, and you consider someone will do you harm you can defend yourself. If someone is in your house even if thy turn and run you can shoot to kill. I think the guy above has best answer tho spag i think
