Because not only is the truth free it is also very simple, most people living in a complicated world of there own making need complicated explanations to explain things.

How many souls out there can dare face or espouse the truth? Some cultures favor "cosmetic" dealings so lies are preferable over the truth to maintain the status quo and preserve whatever image is being upheld. "To rock the boat" is to invite contempt and isolation so many would rather "stay safe". Evil is inherent in every being and there is not much anger in the world to counter it. It takes a lot of willpower to choose to be different for the greater glory of the Truth.

I always thought that since there are so many simple people in the world, if God made up a religion, it wouldn't be so complicated. I agree with CosmicCoyote that the truth is simple. It is the bare, undressed, unadorned beauty, but we cannot see it because we have clothed it in so much dogma.

Lies are much more comforting. To think that you are made in the image of a "god" and that it loves you and you will live forever can be very comforting.

When we are doing something and do not want to give it up and if it is wrong we tend to try to find ways to make it not look so bad. We try to bring someone down to our level so we want seem so along.
