What is the best caliber for target shooting that will give me the best "bang for the buck" and allow me to shoot enough to get to be a better shooter? I'd like to shoot a lot and maybe reload and would consider this a "paper sniper rifle." So accuracy is a driving force of my decision. I'm not hunting either.

I'd say either the 223 or 308 depending on whether 500 yards is your max or not. 308 will carry out more effectively at longer ranges (1000 yards) and the 223's efficiency and ability to buck the wind isn't that great beyond 500 yards. Both are military calibers, can be found in semi auto and bolt action calibers and you can buy bulk surplus ammo (well, you used to be able to) to feed your rifle.

As for a rifle, I'd consider a Remington 700 PSS or an AR15 (223) or AR10 (308) for your bolt action or semi auto needs.

As both a Firearms Dealer and Long Range Rifle Team Competitor, I would recommend the 308 caliber as the "perfect" round. You must realize however 500 yards isn't considered "Medium" range by anyone's standards or definition. The 308 offers the most impressive numbers of bullet styles and weights, but is the most popular competetion ammunition used today.95% of the professional competitors shoot 308's and all you would have to do is witness a competition and you would notice this fact almost immediately. The 308 is an incredibly accurate round and is the round still used most often by Law Enforcement and the Military in special operations situations......

For that range you need a small caliber I recommend either a 25-06 or .243 Both with muzzle velocity's of 3000 fps and at 115-125 grain they have a flat trajectory out to 500 yards.

308 winchester is the preferred "sniper" round used by the us military for many years. Lately, the 300 win mag has shown some really good results, but unless your reloading, the cost for 300 win mag is far greater than .308.

500 yards is not medium range....do you know actually how far that is?

I would go for the .308 without question.

More power, more options for commercial ammo and reloading, not as sensative to wind as the .2XX calibers, proven results in that range.....there is no other.

A .308 will be good but the 6.5x55 swedish is also a very accurate round.
