Complications of pancreatitis can kill people. It's uncommon but it does happen.

Doctors can use something called "Ranson's criteria" to get a rough idea of the risk of death from an attack of pancreatitis - gives them a sense as to whether a patient needs to be watched carefully in the ICU or can be on the regular medical floor or can be at home.
