Slow down. IMO you first need to take a couple of photography classes. Learn about light and f-stops and ISO and shutter speed and composition. Yes, its possible to educate yourself about photography but its easier with an experienced instructor.

You can buy the most expensive, technologically advanced DSLR currently sold and take mediocre photos with if if you don't know what you're doing.

Cameras aren't magical. They have no special powers that transforms an inexperienced, photography illiterate person into an accomplished photographer. Oh you can buy a DSLR and leave it in Program Mode (letting the camera choose aperture and shutter speed) and you will occasionally take a decent photo. You won't know how you did it and you probably won't be able to repeat it. You will have spent a lot of money for a "point & shoot" camera.

I like the Nikkon D-50, but for a novice, the D-70 is probably a better bet, as it has more preset modes. But in either case, a digital slr type camera is the way to go. It combines the best of both worlds, camera wise. It uses no film, yet has no lag time on snapping a picture, because it uses a shutter.
Slr is single lens reflex, and it is just like a 35mm camera, but uses digital storage media, instead of film. A memory card. I can take 553 pics at high resolution before I need to download em to my pc, and burn to disc the ones I really like. You can also take the memory card to any photoshop, walmart, eckerds, whereever and get the pics printed right from the card. Heck, you can even get it done online, and the pics will be sent to you.

Check out the Nikon D40. Currently it goes for under $500 with an 18-55mm zoom lens.

And some pictures I took with the D40's older brother, the D50. Same resolution, very similar specs.

By the way, I'm not an actor or model, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.
