My three year old gets m&m's, oreos, marshmallows, and cake icing from Grandma's house. Grandma lives just around the corner, so we're there almost every day, sometimes two or three times.
I'd like to add some healthy choices to what she has in her house to make it easier to cut back on the sugar my daughter gets there. But if I try to offer an apple when she wants an oreo, my daughter will not be interested.
So, are there healthier alternatives that still seem like a special treat? For instance, are yogurt covered raisins really any healthier than m&m's? Can anyone suggest something more "fun" than regular fruit (which she gets at home) but not as hideous for her as oreos and candy?
Thank you so much for your help!

See that "Friutabu" ad on the side of your screen? That stuff is just dried fruit, but kids love the rolls and it is super sweet. Just a little bit better than candy.
Have you talked to her dentist? Maybe the dentist could give grandma a good talking to, or a bill for how much cavities will cost!-)

Oh, I feel your pain! My in-laws load my son up with junk too but their hearts are in the right place. I like your yogurt covered raisins idea. My son is 2 & he just loves raisins, plain ones. What about unsalted pretzels, whole grain cheerios, oatmeal cookies, yogurt or yogurt based fruit popsicles, cheese strings, mini muffins. Would she eat veggies cut into shapes that she could dip into a veggie dip? Or the same with fruit & yogurt? Maybe dried fruit (just not a lot cause it is high in sugar), or small pieces of almonds...maybe you could make your own trail mix for her. Hope that gives you some ideas! Just make sure you discuss this all with Grandma first & make sure she chucks all the bad stuff cause then she'll probably just end up giving it to her. Either that or your daughter will see it & want that instead of the healthier options. Best of luck!

Maybe you could have a talk with Grandma? If she is keeping the candy around the house just for your daughter, then maybe you can spaek to her about how you'd like her to eat something more nutritous. But if Grandma keeps the food around for herself or other grandkids too, then your better off choosing some of the suggestions listed here. Good Luck :)

1. health candy= health food stores sell 'm+ms' made from carob and natural dye which tastes great and it healthier.
2. fruit can be fun. my nephew luvs luvs luvs dried fruit. try fresh fruit that she hasnt had before- stores sell foreign fruit seasonally. try a starfruit or pomegranate(which are in season soon.
3. health foood stores carry a lot of healthy snacks at great prices. try them!
4. dont go with all that sugarfree ****- kids dont need the empty foods like that. When a tot eats candy it may not have all the nutrients thy need but the calories are sometihng. Sugarfree and diet stuff fills them up without any calorie soo they wont intake enough calories because they fied up on diet sweets..noot to mention that kids dont need to worry a lot about calorieds and they avent researched the affects of fake sugar on kids enough. Every single fake sugar except for the ones they use now has been found to cause cancer and other problems, especially in kids and theres no guarantee that the ones they use now wont. When you were pregnant they told you not to weaet diet foods right? Keep that stuff out of her body now. Sorry for the rant but sum1 suggested it and its better to have a little junk and eat helath food than fil up on diet pop and sugarfree snacks all the time like some people. It sabotaged her eating habits for life nad eating diet foods may give her body issues when she gets to be a preteen.

What about graham crackers? They have tons of fun shaped ones. THe also make fruit snacks and fruit rollups that are actually made of fruit and fruit juices..no extra sugar, die, ect. I found them in the snack section at Target. They taste great, look like candy, and they're healthy!!! Wish I could remember the name of them for ya....

What about trail mix, my daughter loves that stuff and it is better for them than candy. You could also try raisins, when I take my daughter to the dr, the dr offers her either a sucker or raisins, she picks raisins every time.

sugar free Mother's cookies*** my niece snacks pn these @ my house she loves them
** I gave these because you said your child is not interested in apples when going to Grandma's house. This way Grandma can still have the sweet without the sugar. Just a suggestion
