the question is about motivation- think about it, would you care about the homework assignment if you were'nt afraid of failing? Or conversely, you might be interested in finding out the answer on your own, so you don't need the assignment. You find out the answer because you want to know.

Another example is work- many people work because they are afraid that if they don't, they won't be able to eat. Others work because they love it and are interested in the job, and would do it for free if they had to, because they want to do it that badly.

Melting down humankind's activities is like making chocolate. The ingredients start out somewhat the same, but the blending, and quality of ingredients make a difference. Oops, I thought this was a cooking question.

this posits that there are only two ways to make someone do something - they are either afraid not to (I'll fail you if you don't read your history book) or they are interested enough to do it (I love history, I'm going to read this book).

Motivational theory is a bit more complex than this but, it's a valid idea in many cases. Think about why you go to school - afraid of failing or parents? you like it? some other reason?

If you can't scare the crap out of them to do it, dangle a carrot ("interest") to make them do it
