Do you think that there is any comparison to the isolationism that infected the US in the early 1900's (pre WWI) and the late 1930's, (pre WWII) to not wanting to spend money outside our borders on other peoples concerns and not wanting to spend money on space exploration?

I strongly encourage a manned mission to Mars, however I think that the vehicle should be built in Earth orbit so it is a reuseable interplanetary craft. If you truely want to see peace on Earth than it is necessary to reach out into space to create more living space for humanity.

Throwing giant payload up into orbit is not the solution to the exploitation of space, the next generation of space shuttle must be able to fly into space in much the same manner it flys out of Earth orbit.

I think it would be just dandy to land Americans on Mars and bring them safely home.
