No, nothingness is less scary than the thought of being judged by god for stuff we couldn't help doing and then sent to hell for being what he created us to be.

I'm not afraid of death, but I'm afraid of pain. Death is the end of pain. Of course it's hard to imagine just going out, like a candle. You really can't imagine your own non-existence. That's why so many people over the centuries have believed in an afterlife of one sort or another.
To me, the only sort of afterlife that makes sense is reincarnation. If we postulate a cosmic justice, then it seems reasonable that we get a chance to do it over and over until we get it right. Certainly the all-or-nothing heaven-or-hell doctrine of Christianity is inconsistent with a loving God, or even a rational one.

While I'm not encouraging it to happen any sooner than it will, I am not afraid of death as it is a natural part of life. Now, there are ways in which I can die that I would find preferable to others but death itself is not a fearful thing.

This atheist is not. I'm getting real close to that age, too. Were you afraid before you appeared? Then why would you be afraid when you disappear?

Death is a part of life. There's nothing to be afraid of. I do, however, keep reading about Christians who are indeed afraid of oblivion. Perhaps this is one reason they choose to believe in god and a life after death.

If I disappear then I won't know it. However if you are right and there is a heaven and hell, but you have been following the wrong religion all your life, then you could end up some place you don't expect. I'll stick with disappearing.

I'm not going to say that I have *no* fear of death. It's natural for humans to have some fear of death. You wouldn't be normal if you didn't.
I don't, however, have any sort of unnatural fear of death. Yes, I think that there's nothing after it, but it's not like I'm going to be AWARE that there's nothing. There might not be pleasure in it, but there is absolutely no pain or unpleasantness, either. I won't even know the difference.

Nobody wants to die, unless they have something wrong with them.
This desire to live is built into us.
The only difference is that religion offers the false promise of eternal life while most (not all) of the atheists realize that life does indeed come to an end eventually.
What does carry on after you die is your genes, if you were fortunate enough to reproduce.

Everybody is afraid of death, if you see a piano falling from the sky will you just wait for it to hit you and say it was gods will to take me to heaven, or will you do what everybody else will do, move out of the way? we are all designed to avoid the termination of our earthly existance whether or not it is actually the end of conciousness.

Not afraid. Not in a hurry for it to happen or anything.
No need to fear "disappearing" we are not going to know it happened

Nope, death is just part of life, I'll live on in the memories of my friends and family. Granted, I'm not excited about an early death.
