After 26 races this season, Jeff Gordon had a 675 point lead on Clint Bowyer under "regular season" scoring. With the Chase format, you take a driver that has basically just survived this season and had no shot to catch the leader had this been in the days of Petty or Earnhardt, and you put him within 40 points. Now, since he has a great couple of races, something he was not able to do for 2/3 of the season, and he is within 9 points of the Championship? Would fans from 20 years ago been okay with saying Bowyer was the Championship Driver back in the days of old? This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. At least if Stewart, Johnson, or Denny Hamlin won you could argue that they were right there all season long chasing the leader.... but Bowyer? I think I would say this is proof the Chase doesn't work if you are trying to find a system that is fair and really a season of 36 races. Any comments?

Is it fair Kenseth won with only one win? Is the NASCAR Championship designed for the one with the most victories OR is the point system set up to count consistency each week and award points for how you place week after week? Earnhardt didn’t win 7 Championships because he won the most races…. Gordon has won more races in just 15 yrs than Earnhardt won over 25 years and Earnhardt had 7 while Gordon had 4, although if they had left the point system alone, he would have 6 now wouldn’t he?

And remember this when you compare NASCAR to other sports.... most sports do not have to worry about another team on the field not really in the playoffs or the "Chase" taking them out. I am not a fan of either Kyle or Kurt Busch but Kyle lost two spots today because of what exactly on Lap 28? LOL Let's see that in the NBA Finals next year! .... "It is game 7 of the NBA Finals.... the score is tied. What is that, Chuck? Dennis Rodman is running out on the court.... What in the ?? The Ref's have not blown the whistle yet.... I can't believe what I am seeing.... Rodman just elbowed Lebron in the face and steals the ball. He is passsing across the length of the court.... unbelievable... they score! The game is over!!!!! Lebron cannot believe what just happened!!! The NBA is now allowing refs to call fouls when they think they want to and allowing other players and teams to be more involved! OH BOY.This game should get the ratings now and compete with the CHASE!!!!!

Is it fair that Matt Kenseth won the 2003 Cup with 1 win?
The Chase could stand some tweaking to be sure. But just like other sports, NASCAR is attempting a playoff system. I can show you time and time again in other sports where a team that rocked the regular season got steamrolled in the playoffs.
Keep in mind, I'm a Gordon fan. If he was good in the first 26 races, he'll be good in the Chase.
Bowyer earned his spot. Not mention Bowyer ran pretty close to Hamlin all season, and now he's kicking DH's butt. I think you're dismissing Clint's performance to get here.

Never have & never will like the chase format. Bowyer would even have a chance at championship under old system. Gordon would have won his 5th & has a great shot at his 6th title this year but with the chase, it's possible he may not win it. I know a lot of Gordon fans will say that the only reason his fans don't like chase is because he may not win the title, even though he had a good point lead over 2nd place driver after 26 races. I would be willing to be if Stewart or Jr were in 1st place all year & Gordon or Johnson was in the 12 position 675 points out & after the chase started & one of them won, you would be saying the chase is not fair, Stewart or Jr should have title & then you would be complaining about NASCAR should change format or bring back old system. If they want to do a chase format, when they re-set points, give more bonus points fro wins, plus give bonus points for top 5's or top 10's & pole positions or laps lead. Nothing against J Johnson, but he went from 5th or 6th to 1st after the points were re-set & behind by 300 points or more I belive.

Fair being aside, who was leading after 26 races, a new chassis introduction, going back and forth between the two, driving on all 3 types of tracks, really 5 types of tracks, and leading the points with a margin that would be hard to surpass, then to take away the lead and put that driver into 2nd place and start with everyone quote, basically even, is about as socialistic as getting a D in a class subject and at the end of the year allowing that student to be graduated first in the class. What a standard--the dumbing down of America? -- no the dumbing down of US--the NASCAR FAN

The old system needed tweaking....but to totally scrap the points lead that somebody had built up over the regular season is ridiculous.

I like the recent change with giving extra points per each win though. Now all they need to do is reward the driver who was leading the points at the end of the regular season. That driver should be given 25-50 points (in addition to any wins) going into the Chase.

The Chase format is flawed in many ways, and allowing drivers with over 400 points plus behind the points leader a chance to win the Championship by erasing those points and separating the drivers by 5 point increments is total nonsense. Gordon was already denied one Championship due the new format, will he be denied another Championship due to the current format? It very well could happen and imo, that is wrong!!

If an NFL teams goes 16-0 they son't start the playoffs with a 24-0 lead do they?

The chase is what it is, a chance to get more teams involved! If Gordon was 400 pts behind then all his fans would be loving the chase!

Everyone knew the rules going in so just let them handle their business on the track!

Under your logic the St. Louis Cardinals shouldn' be World Series champs they were only 83-79 last year but they got in and got hot at the right time ( Sounds a lot like Bowyer!)

Heyyell no it ain't fair.NASCAR is a political body and the team with the biggest amount of money wins.
Include the lame top 35 in points and the provisionals, all just a way to give people a free ride.
Let the fastest 43 race and after 36 races the one with the most points win.Not the most money.

No. I feel that the driver with the most points should win. This format excludes any driver who may get "hot" at the end of the season. I think it was created to make sure that the "stars" could be in the "hunt" at the expense of all the other drivers on the track.

I agree if it was good enough for Earnhart Sr. and The King to win 7 Championships it should have never changed!!!! It is just a controversial mess. Those who dont win will say if it was under the Old system I would be the Champion. And the controversy will go on and on.

I don't think there should be any driver locked in the chase. I think it should be the driver with the most points at the end of the season wins the championship.
