Chains are a cruel means of confinement. I'm sure your lab would much rather be safe in a crate in your home waiting for you than chianed outside at the mercy of the weather and whatever animal or person that wanders by.

You should have added details to this question. I can tell you right now, my first thought is that you are chaining this dog up outside. And that is never good to do for any dog. It makes the odds of them being aggressive rise. They will have more of a change of being territorial. As for caging. It depends on when you plan to crate train the dog. No dog should be in a kennel all day. Especially labs. During the night and when you leave the house, while they are being trained is acceptable, but it is not meant to be their main living quarters. They need to run and be free. So depending on your intent... Neither should be done. But I try not to assume. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

It depends on the dog. My parents have a lab who has a kennel inside, but when they let her out it's on a chain- chiefly to keep her from running away or finding other mischief.

But labs are strong dogs. And I have known dogs who would regularly break chains. So if your lab is a 'breaker', you'll want a cage, with concrete or gravel buried so the dog can't dig out.

Good luck!

If those are your sole choices, you do NOT need to get a dog, period.

Dogs should be family members, in the house.
They need to be either in a fenced area or on leash when outside, but they should never be chained up or caged.
Crate training is something else entirely.

Please read a book about dogs and dog training before you even consider getting one.

You need to be more specific with your question. Do you have a chain in your house?

ugh, this is a dumb question, if you are going to chain it up, then you should not have a dog, any dog...
