If you are keyed in more on gaining muscle mass and overall strength I would suggest doing interval cardio training over long distance running/biking. Do a warmup then cycle sprints and medium pace intervals. Long distance cardio gets your body into a catabolic state - to build muscle you want to stay anabolic.

Yes, weights can help develope muscles. Of course, it all depends upon your age, your physical fitness and all that. When I was younger, I could snatch 220 lbs.; I never ever looked the same as Charles Atlas or Arnold. Most of it is in your genes; the rest is up to you.
But, walk, run, bike, or swim; do stretching excersices, pushups, situps (the real ones, not these phony ones they show nowadays) and PUSH yourself; it will come.

Keep it natural. Avoiding processed foods will maintain your digestion working efficiently as well as minimise your salt intake.
