nop
is a rip off

they already showed that on msnbc
that people are receiving that kind of emails and they are asked to send some amount of money back to be able to get a bigger amount

think about it, who would want to receive a small amount of money and give you a super large amount of money back???
no one!!!

so is a total rip off

Here's how their scam works. You cash the check and send them the "clearance fees." Then a few days later the bank tells you the check bounced and you have to return the money plus pay a penalty. But you already sent money to the scammers! Oh no!

Anyway, it's a scam. Destroy it or contact the police if you think they'll be able to do anything.

does it say somewhere on the check 'this is not a real check' ?

You could also try opening a new bank account, in a different bank than the one you normally use, and cashing the check in. Once it clears, withdraw all the money, and close the account. That way, if it is a real check, you still get the money, without them having any way of finding out what your normal account details are.

DO NOT TRY TO DEPOSIT IT IN YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.

Chances are, if it's for a competition you didn't enter, it's a scam.

It's a scam. If it came in the mail (and I am assuming it did), take it to your local post office. They have specialists that deal with mail fraud and fraudulent checks.

Also, take a copy of the check and letter to your police department, they may be able to use the information to track the criminals down.
